Show Young Smootby and Old: Smoolfc?, Young Smootby writing for the Journal states that some years ago some facetious Republican named Aaron Farr "Old Smoothjv" The Democrats as usual being a little ashamed of what they have done In their own party are trying to blamo it to tho Republicans. Tho facts arc that this name was given Mr. Farr by a Democrat, and It it becomes, necessary neces-sary for us to get personal wo will give his name to the public. You are now endeavoring to do the samo thing again I. c. start a slang name for Mr. llullen but It won't amount to much. Tho Republicans have too much respect re-spect for a man like Mr. Aaron F. Farr to either create or try to keep alive such an epithet for him. Now as to tho balance of tho article printed print-ed In tho Journal regarding Mr. Uullen wherein It states "It is hinted that this goodly salary was secured through the efforts of "Ilrer" Rullen." In answer an-swer to this wo will say that the motion mo-tion to give Mr. Benson the extra $.1 per mouth for cleaning and taking care of the additional floor at the Woodruff school was seconded by a Democratic member of tho Hoard of Education and also voted for by him. As regards tho Justice of Mr. Henson receiving $53 per month we would first refer to tho fact as stated by the Journal vls. "that Mr. Benson Is a good Janitor", furthermore that many times ho Is required in order to have tho work done In first class shape, as all teachers will testify that ho docs do, ho Is unable to do It alone and provides aid at his own expense, and were this not tho case neither the Republican party or Mr. Bullen are ashamed to pay even a janitor $53 per month If It Is evident that ho earns it. Tho Insult to Mr. Benson in effect that ho manipulated tho 4th Ward primary on the Interests of Mr. Rullen Is one that will bo resented by all who know Mr. Benson. Tho Journal cannot make tho public bellovo that a person '.vho has a drop of Benson blood in his veins can bo purchased for tho paltry sum of $3.00 0 Mr. Bullen states that ho bcllovej that too much discrimination Is sometimes some-times mado between tho man who tolls from curly morn until late at night with his bunds and thoso who aro more fortunato as to obtain very lucrative lucra-tive positions with practically little 2 work to do, and he Is willing to let the voters Judge this case on Itsmerlta. Furthermore tho Journal states that Mr. George Wooley, who also is a good Janltor.and a good man, only receives $15.00 per month as Janltoi of the courthouse which Isa salary set by the Democratic commissioners. Of course there Is a vast difference between be-tween the work at the court house and the Woodruff school, the latter having about 600 children who enter the building three times each day carrying car-rying dirt and dust In each time, whereas the court house some dajs Is very quiet, not more than twoor three doen people visiting there. And still Mr. Bullen does not believe the salary paid Mr. Wooley by the Democrats compaics favorably with the other salary paid by the Democratic commissioners, com-missioners, and the question "would It not have been right and Just for the commissioners when raising the salaries sal-aries of the county employees, to have given Mr. Wooley, a man who works and tolls with his hands, some consideration?" consid-eration?" will be asked by the working work-ing man. Mr. Bullen thinks Mr. Wooley deserving of consideration in this way and so docs every other friend of the working man. Janitor Woorley Is required to put In about ten hours per day for every two that commissioner puts in. Mr. Marshall who Is deputy Sheriff receives $20 per month for holding the office. We do not believe that these commissioners commis-sioners arc living up to the maxim that Dcmociacy loves to sound In the ears of the voters Just before election, "Equal rights to all, special privileges to none" or there would not be so much dlffcience between tho man who works and the man who gets the nay for holding the office as arranged : by Demociacy. , |
