Sandy girl hurt boating at Gorge A 12-year-old Sandy girl underwent surgery Sunday night at LDS Hospital in an attempt to save her right leg which was nearly cut off by a propeller in a boating accident Sunday afternoon at Flaming Gorge. Flaming Gorge State Park Ranger Larry Mullins identified the girl as Holly Berger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Berger, 1089 Bell Canyon Drive. A hospital spokesman said the girl is listed in serious condition. Mr. Mullins said the girl was riding in her father's boat about one-third mile up Horseshoe Canyon on the reservoir when the Berger boat slammed into the rear of a boat which was stopped w hile passengers looked at an osprey nest near the shore at about noon. The girl, he said, was thrown from the boat and became entangled near the propeller of the second boat, piloted by C. R. Carhart, Salt Lake City. The propeller blades apparently severed both bones in the girl's leg below the knee, Mr. Mullins said. A passing boat was flagged down and the girl was taken to the Lucerne Marina. She w as picked up by Lifeflight Helicopter and arrived at the hospital shortly before 4 p.m. |
