Show Drug fugitive captured A major distributor of controlled substances was arrested last Friday in Vernal by Vernal City Police and Drug Enforcement agents. John Michael Carey, 35, of Ancon, Panama is incarcerated in the Uintah County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail and will be transferred shortly to New Jersey where he is wanted on drug charges. Carey had been living in the area a year under the name of Jay Dean Richardson, said Robert T. Downard, Vernal City Chief of Police. Investigations In-vestigations by Vernal City Police and drug officials from the Drug Enforcement En-forcement Administration and Utah Narcotics and Liquor Law Enforcement En-forcement Agency revealed that Carey was a fugitive from New Jersey where he was charged a year ago April with the transportation of 2"2 tons of . marijuana. He jumped his bail of $50,000 and left the state of New Jersey. He is also wanted for possession and dealing in the distribution of heroin in California, Downard said. Carey was captured at his residence in Vernal at 4:30 p.m. "Drug Enforcement Administration agents have records which show Carey to be a major actor in the distribution of . controlled substances," Downard said. In an unrelated incident Saturday, July 11, Robert Vanderbusse, Vernal City Police, was called to the Dinaville Motel, 800 West Main, for a reported felony theft. Witnesses at the scene said they saw stolen property being stored in room number 14 at the motel. Detectives Mel (Continued on Page 2) Drug fugitive (Continued from Page 1) Curtis and Joe Boren secured a search warrant and recovered $800 in property stolen early Saturday from a vehicle parked at the Dinaville owned by Jose Barbury of Salt Lake City. Mike Sampson, 24, of Pennsylvania was arrested at the residence on a felony theft charge and is in the Uintah County Jail on $2,000 bail. Sampson was arraigned in the 7th Circuit Court Tuesday. Police also arrested Laura Harms, of Vernal for writing bad checks in the Vernal area amounting to over $250, said Darrell Lance, Vernal City Police. She was arrested in Duchesne County Monday at 11:30 a.m. and is serving time in the Duchesne County Jail for writing bad checks and will later face charges in Vernal. |
