Show TIJE4ITY WATER SUPPEYt For years a large and worthy class of our citizens have been vainly appealing for a water supply All the promises which an imbecile city government has made to the car have been broken to the hopes While the people have been enduring the tortures of a Tantalus the city ofllcials with their aids and abettors have been engaged in some very mysterious myste-rious and inexplicable to the public conduct con-duct The higher portions of the cily required re-quired the water We are told that 255 000 has been charged to the account of some canal Still the taxpayer bears the additional burden of principal and interest inter-est and the great thirst of the people has noalleviation r zt f J en That which was wanting has not been supplied the pure water we before had is deteriorated and fouled Valuable lands I have been converted into bogs and marshes and property otherwise seriously damaged These are some of the fruits of Uis extraordinary ex-traordinary expenditure Why was this canal built 80 that it could not supply theater the-ater where it was needed Why was the point of intersection of the head of the canal rite tHe Jordan river fixed so as to be slxtj feet vertically below where it might have i been placed When upon this unnecessarily unneces-sarily low level the canal had been constructed con-structed to Mill Creek why was that flume so made as to precipitate the water another vertical forty feet Win were those hundred feet thrown away when they were absolutely required if i those who needed the water were to be supplied The reader may note that there is one insignificant item of canal expense amounting to some forty thousand dollars dol-lars it is true whirh has never been clearly specified A The still thirsty and overburdened taxpayer is expected however to contribute con-tribute to pay it Perhaps the aforesaid hunched feet and the hopes of the famishing fam-ishing benches were thrown away to gain a pretext for the pocketing by somebody some-body of this snug forty thousand The pretext was the valueless abandoned and almost forgotten site of an Old Canal The man who got the money is a reputed churchman who is prone to hay like Louis XIV The State I am the State Now you thirsty and patched ones what are you going to do about it It is an important question and should he sternly answered at the polls |
