Show I New Trial Ordered I The case of II J Bridges a former resident of this city who was on trial in Honolulu Sandwich Ifilancs for the killing kill-ing of one Paton has been inquired into I by the State Department and orders issued that his interests should be carefully I care-fully protected The case of Bridges is a peculiar one and illustrates fully the methods in vogue in the Sandwich Islands He is a St Louisian by birth his father being engineer at the United States Mills Bridges went to Honolulu in the fall of 1880 and after residing there had a difficulty with the man Paton who threatened his life This went on until November 23 Jast Patons threats becoming more and more violent On that date Bridges had occasion to pass Patons place of business and wishing to avoid him passed on the opposite side of the street He had passed some distance when he was assaulted from behind and was struck twice on the head with a club He saw that his assailant was Paton and remembering the threats pulled his pistol and shot him dead Public feeling ran high for Paton was well known and I a member of seven of the secret societies on tho island Bridges laWers recognizing I I recogniz-ing this feeling prevailed upon him to plead guilty to manslaughter in the second sec-ond degree and he was sentenced to five years imprisonment The United States Minister and others having witnessed the shooting and knowing it to be in self defense corresponded with tho United I States State Department and according I to letters received here yesterday Bridges I will have a new trial I |
