Show Ir 7 SALT LAX WARBLERS I Prof B 1 Youngs School of Sm Observations on Salt Lake Singers The Daughter of Jarius c tnt the Patience presentations and many other musical entertainments that have been given in this city by local talent have led the public to believe that Salt Lake contains more vocalists and more latent musical talent than any other city oi its size and age i the country The recent musical entertainments that have been given here have aroused an intense interest inter-est in vocal music and a great many of the curious have been wondering what progress is being made by Prof Youngs new venture the Salt Lake School of singing who his pupils were etc A DEMOCRAT representative whose insati able appetite for information is never fully satisfied hummed over a Patience air yesterday afternoon a an inspirational and strolled around to Calders temple of music Following the flood of melody that floated up the broad staircase from the throats of two or three local vocalists who were rehearsing something some-thing or other at the piano the DEMOCRAT found itself hi the large hal above one end of which has been cut off by heavy tapestry for the accommodation of Prof Youngs pupils A lady pupil was just going through her regular exercise exer-cise and the melodious tralaloos that floated out from behind the heavy hangings hang-ings had a tendency to put the reporter in just the right mood to interview a musical musi-cal celebrity Glad to see you come right in and b seated exclaimed the sunnytempered Professor when he learned the object of the DEMOCRATS visit You want to know something about my School of Music do you Well it is more strictly a school of singing as that is the only branch of music I teach yetI yet-I have met with very good success Of course times are dull and I expect to have more pupils when they improve but I think considering other conditions that Salt Lake contains an exceptional amount of talent and that I have a large field to work in Who are my pupils You will find them all I think on this slip and the Professor produced the following list Misses Lynch Grace Young Mary Teas del Nellie Crane Crissie Lawson Grace Amy Mrs James Hogle Miss Mattie Royle Miss Woods Messrs J P Meakin 1 H McAllister D H Calder Prof Krouse D C Young T Harper Rev Mr Lamb W W Mackintosh J T Dunbar E C Parry Mr G Hampton The professor continued Several of my pupils have excellent voices and talent and promise much in the future My Ogden school is only prospective as yet I am waiting for them to guarantee me a certain number of pupils Misses Deel and Reno and Messrs Wardleigh and Rank are among those who desire me to open a school in that city In speaking of his future intentions and desires Professor Young said he hoped to secure a sufficient number of pupils t enable him to start an oratorio society He also intends giving a course of lectures on singing within the next three months for the benefit of the general gene-ral public Dont you think there are some voices of great promise in the Patience company com-pany inquired the reporter Miss Thatcher has an excellent voice but I am not prepared to say that it is anything wonderful I think she committed com-mitted a great mistake by appearing before be-fore the public while her voice was in such an untrained state Miss Edna Russell Rus-sell and Mr Pyper also have good voices Do you know I dont think much of comic opera I dont think it is of much benefit to the public I think it is much better to give the public something a little above it than something it easily understands But the public is apt to best appreciate appre-ciate that which it easily understands I know that but it always remains as it is it never gets any higher There is Theodore Thomas for instance He was not appreciated at first but has gradually raised the public to his own plane and then hebecame popular and he will remain so The conversation here branched off upon more commonplace topics that the upn public would not be interested in But the above i sufficient to show what progress Professor Young is making in his efforts to cultivate the musical tastes and talents of Salt Lake It may be of interest to the public to mention in this connection that Madame Younk the gifted wife of the Professor who assists him in his duties is the daughter of the late Signor Mazzucato who was for many years and up to the time of his death director of the Conservatory Con-servatory of Music of Milan the institution institu-tion where Mr Robert Gorlinski has been pursuing his musical studies |
