Show COMMITTEE SECURES DATA ON1 MARKETING AND WILL REPORT Acting for the temporary executive committee of the Southern Utah Marketing Mar-keting association, the writer has spent nearly two weeks in the gathering gather-ing of data for the compilation of articles of incorporation and bylaws by-laws for the association, and suggestions sug-gestions for its management. In that time we have traveled many miles, interviewed many men, and have been given an insight into the inner workings of some of the world's largest andl most successful co-operative marketing associations, none of whom, however, are as varied in their scope or as complex in their problems as is ours. Doubtless the best posted man in America on co-operative marketing, is Hon. Fred Bigelow, state market director of CatlTornia, with head quarters in the King building, San Francisco. We found Mr. Bigelow exceedingly kind, courteous and ready rea-dy to extend every assistance within his power. Here are a few of his suggestions, which we may add5, were also advanced in a varying degree by the officials of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, California wal nut Growers, Lima Bean Growers Ex change, Southern California Poultry-men's Poultry-men's Association, California Raisin Growers Association, Mr. Coons, general gen-eral agent o fthe Union Pacific railway rail-way and others: Danger in Mixed Products The eminent success attained by our leading California co-operative marketing associations, comes largely large-ly from the ability to control their product. They are large producers, producing 60 to 90 per cent of the nations output of their line, hence they are in a position to demand a fair price for their crops; in other words to literally set their own price Southern Utah, of course, cannot hope to dothis a.r you raise products common to the world. So your benefits bene-fits from co-operation will be the raising of as goodi or a superior product pro-duct in sufficient quantities to attract at-tract large buyers, in securing lowered lower-ed freight rates through increased tonnage etc. This, you can and should do successfully. You will be the pioneers in this work, however, at 'east I do not now recall of any other organization working on so wide a s r f e. Yet that does not mean that you cannot successfully do so, I believe the farm bureau can be a derived help to you and should be used for that purpose. The farm bureau bu-reau of Northern California is. just now successfully marketing their grain co-operatively, and this, . too, while commiision men and brokers are standing by saying 'it cannot be done. You will succeed in proportion propor-tion to the r.bility and honesty of your manager p.ncl board of directors, and the full1 end confidence and assistance as-sistance your members give to them. Others, as stated, feel very much as Mr Bigelow does about it Freight Rates to be Reduced We found the Union Pacific officials offici-als more than anxious to co-operate with us and when asked for a reduction reduc-tion in freight rates on carload lots of corn etc., shipped from eastern points and on which local rates have heretofore applied from Salt Lake, Ogden or Provo, w;e were assured that a satisfactiry rate wouldi soon be established, thus permitting feeders to be fattened at home for the livestock live-stock market. This will assure a saving sav-ing of many hundreds of dollars annually an-nually to Southern Utah farmers. Fat Stock Wanted We also met the manager of the Los Angeles Union stock yards and through him the vice president of the First National bank, of Los Angeles, and were assured prompt action and financial assistance if necessary for the marketing of our fat cattle, hogs and sheep and other products in Los Angeles. Organization I.s Needed On every hand we were assured that Southern Utah cannot do a better bet-ter thing in marketing of Us crops than to organize. Not necessarily on an extensive scale; much better it is thought, to start' small, lay a sure foundation and eventually build Into a big business than to start big, plunge, and invite disaster. But organize or-ganize immediately and. get busy marketing such crops as we have and plan bigger, better and more desirable desir-able crops for the future. Celery and Potatoes Of especial interest is the fact that we have one big Los Angeles, commission com-mission house that wants 60 carloads of celery and will take all first class Idaho Rural potatoes we can- raise. and at better than market figures.
