Show TAX PROBLEM GENERAL Tax agitation is not confined to the West. Senator Davenport, of New York, says the average per capita taxation in that state is $107, or more than $5 0 0 a year for the usual family. Assuming that the tax rale in the other states approximates that of New York, the total becomes staggering stagger-ing in its enormity and it is not hard to see why the people usually so careless about governmental expenditures expen-ditures are rising in bitter protest. It will however take more than a protest, even at the polls, to obtain relief. It is not a party matter to be rid of by "turning the rascals out," and voting in the other fellows. The officials themselves are, to a great lit. uyi (jit-so. i tir it-yjjiirj lusini vu universal service and improvements which cost money. They take all the pap the government will give them, and try for more. The kind of ser- i vice we get from the government costs a lot of money, and even if i adminstrations are economically conducted con-ducted the taxes are bound to be high. The people must be educated to ve'e against men and measures that raise taxes, and to demand a sizable reduction. If the people do not fight for reductions, those in office will onstan'Iy demand more. |
