That a simple test of whether the carburetor is proixrly ad- justed is to run for a short dis- J ; tance say a quarter of a mile J with the throttle practically ' 1 5 closed. Then, picking a space 1 i where the roadway is clear, step , i sharply upon the accelerator, y I thus opening the throttle wide, i If the car speeds up smoothly 5 and rapidly, there Is nothing ? wrong with the carburetor. But if the pick-up is slow, this Is an ? Indication that tlie mixture of gasoline and air Is too rich. If the engine splutters, spits and back-tires, the mixture is too lean a condition which can be $ 5 temporarily remedied by the use of the "choker" or priming lever on the dashboard. In either case. X It Is advisable to have the car- j J buretor adjusted as soon as pos- 5 sible, for, until this Is done, the X I car will not develop the power which it should. This adjust- nient, however, should be ban- ? 5 died by an expert, for "monkey- J ing with the carburetor" has J probably been Ihe cause of more J engine trouble than any other j single piece of amateur expeii- i menting.
