Educator suggests use of academic letters An educator says interest continues con-tinues to build for the academic letter let-ter program at Viewmont High School in which students are visibly vis-ibly honored with academic achievement. MORE THAN 40 juniors and seniors have been awarded academic acade-mic letters or subsequent gold bars for use on previously-earned letters, let-ters, according to school administrators adminis-trators who started the unique program in the 1984-85 school year. The letters may be worn on athletic letter jackets of student athletes or on approved school sweaters. "The purpose is to distinguish academic excellence in a visible form so that students can be recognized," recog-nized," says Fred Brown, assistant assis-tant principal. TO QUALIFY for an academi letter, a senior must earn a 3. cumulative grade point average fo five consecutive semesters an have enrolled in at least 10 acade mic "basic" classes in mathema tics, science, language arts or sc ciat studies. Juniors applying fa letters must have earned a 3. grade-point average for three con secutive semesters while enrolls in at least six "basic" courses While not elegible for the lette program, sophomores can receive a Certificate for Academi1 Achievement by earning a-3.' grade-point average for two semes ters with a minimum of.fou "basic" classes.
