Show BttfL Svrestles5 with budget By GARY R. BLODGETT News Editor BOUNTIFUL - There's going to have to be some give and take for Bountiful City to have a balanced 1986-87 fiscal year budget ready for adoption next June. BEFORE ENTERING the "cut here and slice there ' routine with department heads of the city, the tentative operations and maintenance budget is about $828,000 out of whack -- on the minus side. This means that city officials thus far have more on the expenditure-side of the ledger than on the income and something some-thing has got to give. There must either be an increase in revenues re-venues or a reduction in expenditures, or both IT'S LIKELY to be the latter, a little give and take on both sides. The first proposed budget to surface with the Bountiful City Council has a total of $28,307,079 earmarked for expenditures but only $27,479,387 estimated as income - a shortfall of about $828,000. ALSO, THE city's capital improvement's has a little revamping revamp-ing to do before it becomes a balanced budget and ready for .r adoption. City Manager Tom Hardy said projects earmarked for expenditures ex-penditures total about $2,320,600 but the projected income is only about $1,400,000. "THAT LEAVES us more than $1 million in the red in the early stages of the budget planning, but there arc ways of overcoming over-coming this deficit," he said. Mr. Hardy explained that not all the figures arc on the tentative tenta-tive budget sheet and the figures could be a little misleading if taken out of context. "IT TAKES time to juggle things around and come up with a balanced budget -- but that's something every city must do." he said. "We don't have the freedom of working with an unbalanced unba-lanced - or inflated budget -- like the federal government." Mr. Hardy said the council and all department heads arc aware of the shortfall -- and the problems that will exist with coming up with a balanced budget. "IT'S GOING to be much more difficult to bring the figures together and balance the budget this year than in mtiny years." he noted. The council will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Bountiful Cil Hall to review the budget. Public is invited. Bsa |
