Show Moab Leo Club Active With Many Projects The Moab LEOS are active again, according to a recent announcement announce-ment by the Club's Vice President, Debbie Ma-bery. Ma-bery. Last year, about this time, a Moab Leo Club was started under the sponsorship of the local Lions Club. This is a youth organization open to all eligible, persons, per-sons, ages 15 through 20, regardless of scho-lastic scho-lastic or athletic achievements. The letters let-ters LEO stand for Leadership, Lea-dership, which members have . the opportunity to gain, Experience, which members gain in many fields, and Opportunity to serve their corn- munity. ' Bob Stephens, a Junior, Ju-nior, is this year's president pre-sident with Debbie Ma-bery, Ma-bery, Senior, as Vice President, and ReNann Arch e r, Sophomore, Secretary - Treasurer. The two other members of the Board of Directors Direc-tors are: Loraine Ottin-ger, Ottin-ger, Sophomore, and Walter Contrearas, a Junior. The membership is constantly growing in both boys andgirls, Miss Mabery said. One Leo member attended at-tended the Lions District Dis-trict 28-A Cabinet meeting meet-ing in Park City during the weekend of Nov. 4. During this meeting all Lions Clubs within the District, which covers all of Eastern Utah, were challenged to sponsor Leo Clubs with the hope that at least five more Clubs will be started before be-fore the close of the present school year. Having other clubs in Utah will enable the members of our club to gain additional experience exper-ience through helping the other clubs to "get their feet off the ground," Miss Mabery said. "It will also give our young people a chance to get together for activities and to hold District and State Conventions," she added. The Club's most recent re-cent local activity is assisting in setting up the new Alcohol and Drug Information Center in the back end of the old Post Office Building and adjacent to the Alchoho-lics Alchoho-lics Anonymous Center. Seven Leos have thus far contributed a total of 29 hours painting the interior inter-ior of this building according ac-cording to Leo Club president pre-sident Bob Stephens. On the international scale the Moab Leos are assisting the Lions Care Program in which an un-derpriviledged, un-derpriviledged, 17 year old girl in Uruguay, South America may be able to walk again. Spurred by a letter to Lions District Governor Lloyd Winward of Vernal, Ver-nal, from the President of the Nueva Palmira, Uruguay Lions, asking for information about obtaining an artificial leg, the Lions of District Dis-trict 28 have taken on the project of providing provid-ing the limb as a part of their Lions CARE program. The Moab Leos Le-os have pledged their support. There are no hospitals in Uruguay that could provide this service ser-vice or even the desired desir-ed information, Miss Mabery said. The girl, whose family is very poor, lost her leg due to a disease contracted in her community. Plans are to bring her to the United States for orthopedic orth-opedic treatment and therapy, she added. To raise money for this project the Leos will be cutting and delivering Christmas trees during the next two weeks. They will be mounted on stands and delivered to your door at a cost of $1.00 per foot. Interested Interest-ed persons are asked tcf call Bob Stephens, 259-" 7222; Debbie Mabery 259-6766; or ReNann Archer at 259-5591. The residents of Moab have always been noted for their willingness to come to the aid of others, oth-ers, Miss Maberry said. "We are sure you will be proud to have been a part of this project," she concluded. Future planned projects pro-jects call for sending Braille Christmas cards to blind students, get-well get-well cards to victims of sickness or accidents while passing through our community, setting up a "trail for the nan-' dicapped" in the Moab1 area, and assisting the Lions with their District Round-up which is to be held in Moab the latter lat-ter part of April. The Leos are planning activities ac-tivities in and around Moab for visiting Leos and Lions family mem-, bers. In the meantime, f fun activities are also planned, such as tubing-sledding tubing-sledding parties and a rampout safari. The club meets at 8 p.m. every second and fourth ' Wednesday in the : basement of First Wes- j tern National Bank. Rodney Rod-ney Phillips is the lo-J cal Leo Club advisor.' -V |
