Show The Lost Word . The Ghosts of Halloween Past By CHEKJE HUBER Remember when Halloween was just another minor holiday? Take a look around you this year. My, how things have changed. Do you want to send out cards for Halloween? Hal-loween? Head for the nearest card shop and there they are. Maybe you could pull out the Christmas card list early this year and use it for your Halloween mail. Remember when J people used to carve pumpkins? Now you can paint a pumpkin pump-kin with a stencil and paint. Another option is to skip the whole thing and just buy one of those jack-o-lantcrns made of foam. The days when you could hand the kids a sheet and a tube of old lipstick and tell them to get dressed is over too. Halloween masks can cost close to $100. If you count the hours mothers spend shopping for and sewing halloween costumes, the little outfit for the school parade did not come S cheap cither. 'p Then there's this thing about entertainment. Remember f when the big thing on Halloween was bobbing for apples and maybe a dime for the fish pond. Now spook alleys arc big business. Remember when the kids wanted to avoid the haunted house in the neighborhood. Now people are willing to stand in line for several hours just to be scared out of their mind. Speaking of being scared, whatever happened to those nice ghosts like Casper the Friendly ghost. Now that's how Td like to spend my Halloween, watching old Casper cartoons! |
