Home computers can be used to save money on insurance By R. LYNN JACKMAN Homeowners, it's time you put your computer to work for you. How? Use it to save money on your property insurance. All you need is a word-processing word-processing program. This is a program prog-ram which turns your computer into a typewriter and allows you to edit your manuscript on the screen. What does a word-processing program have to do with insurance? insur-ance? You can save money on your homeowners insurance. What you have to do is type up a list of your valuables on your computer. It's a snap to update when you sell or buy something. There is a catch to this. Most premiums have floaters which cover cov-er half your property value with limits on computers, guns and jewelry. Some companies offer a discount for people who take on extra coverage provided they provide pro-vide a list of their valuables. The best thing to do is to check with your insurance agency to see what their requirements are and what discounts they offer. Businesses can also benefit from this. You will need a printer to get a copy of the list from the compute; This is a machine that will'lype your document from the computer's compu-ter's direct instructions. If your computer is compatible with the one at the office, that means if you have an IBM clone at your house and one at work, you can bring the disk with your list stored on it to work and get a print out there. Apple, Radio Shack's Color Computer, Atari, Commodore and IBM will not run each other's software soft-ware for reasons I can't get into here. Here are a few other things you might want to try if you don't own a computer. Join a local users' group for your system. They have computer com-puter printers you can rent. Some libraries have computers you can use. It's also a good idea to make up a backup copy of the disk with your list and store it somewhere safe. You may even want to keep it in your safety deposit box. In fact, it is a good idea to make a back-up copy of all your disks. I use the back-up copies. The originals are stored in a safe place away from the other disks. The reason is that if any thing happens to one set the other set won't be ruined. Some companies do not allow you to make back up copies. Others allow you only to make back up copies for yourself. Check with the licensing agreement which comes with your program to be certain. cer-tain. Another thing you can do if you have a hard disk is to store the programs on a hard disk. You can also do this for your files. Pardon the pun, but it is good insurance for your computer. |
