Show Ccntcrvillc Council NSL bid to join fire district will be aired October 7th By PAULA HUFF CENTER V1LLE After two hours of debate, the Centervil-le Centervil-le City Council unanimously voted to table a decision allowing North Salt Lake to join the South Davis Fire District interlocal agreement. Councilman Jerald L. Jenson, who made the motion to table action, said there was not sufficient information presented to the council detailing how the district would be effected on a long term basis if North Salt Lake joined. "Last time this was brought before the council we asked for information explaining how the district would be effected on a long term basis rather than an annual cost per capita basis if North Salt Lake joined," Mr. Jensen said. Mr. Jensen said the information presented to the council was not lor g term and he committed himself to researching how the district would be effected by North Salt Lake joning. Councilman Kent.M. Lindsey voted to table action until a clause in the interlocal agreement said Centerville would have a fire station by a given deadline. Mr. Lindsey also mentioned that if North Salt Lake joined the district, the district would be paying for 43 percen of the new combination city hall-fire station recently built. "The district is buying and paying for 43 percent of North Salt Lake's new city hall-fire station," he said. "And North Salt Lake is receiving the equity for the structure." Councilman Bruce E. Erickson agreed to table the motion until the worksheets presented to the council were modified. "I'd like to see the interlocal agreement changed to show that the money paid for the lease of North Salt Lake's fire station becomes an asset of the district." One year ago, North Salt Lake requested to join the southern fire district on a tiral basis. The city was allowed to participate in the district, although it was not given a vote on the district's board. Now North Salt Lake wants to join the district permanently. North Salt Lake Mayor D.W. Simmons said now the city wants to join the district for "economic and efficiency reasons." "The day and period of time is past when small cities can afford their own fire departments," he said. Mayor Simmons also said if North Salt Lake had to return to operating its own fire department "it would be devastating to the city." The subject of North Salt Lake joining the district will be presented to the Centerville City Council again on Oct. 7. In other business, the council approved a $5,000 budget for improvement of legal enforcement and investigation of city ordinances. Mayor Dean C. Argyle said city employees are working overtime over-time to investigate and send out letters notifying citizens of property violations against city ordinances. He said the city would like to pay for over-time out of the $5,000 in the part-time help budget. Mr. Jensen said, "I would feel a lot more comfortable if we were using that $5 ,000 for enforcement of city ordinances rather than for notification of violation." "I agree we've got to put some muscle into our enforcement of city ordinances," Mayor Argyle said. City Administrator David A. Hales said a part-time employee would have to be hired for enforcement of city ordinances. "We are lacking the manpower to enforce city ordinances," Mr. Hales said. "The council can pursue legal enforcement of the ordinances, but we don't have the manpower to do that right now." |
