Show scenic san juan scenes SECOND installment I I 1 k vat A I 1 PIN k A it U 0 on CHURCH ROCK WHAT THE TOURIST MAY SEE WHILE VISITING THE SAN JUAN NATURAL WONDERS the route from the east into san juans scenic wonderland offers tourists who are visiting northern new mexico and western colorado points an excellent opportunity to see some of Na naters tursi s most unique and awe i natural wonders I 1 it is only about one hundred miles from mesa verde Yat national lonal park to monticello from where all roads lead to beautiful scenery here also the tourist may procure information as 1 1 ty r c A ar st A i i rb r B si S 2 5 47 AN i te T 4 a THE EDWIN NATURAL BRIDGE to routes and road conditions those thos wishing to view the dry valley dis j erict which includes church rock have only to travel ten miles north 1 ward to do so people having means and leaisure leal sure may engage a pack outfit and cross the blues to the needle I 1 abounds ain in cliff rulus ruins 1 nn and picture writing of a nature sn seen nowhere else about twenty miles to the south ward is the town of blanding at this the largest town in san juan I 1 i antho just a village information as 0 to o guides and direction may be had for the asking altho aitho a guide is not absolutely necessary while the natural bridges which are situated 40 miles west of blanding a I 1 more thorough and enjoyable trip is assured with the aid of one fa f I 1 with the territory i As one travels westward thru the scrub pine and juniper forests he h mav chrict sudden surprises in the nature ri ture of hairpin hair pin turns which sud denev reveal chasms of surprising depth into one must descend on oil the westward journey the elk mountain must be crossed en route which provides restful mountain scenes quaking aspen groves and magnificent pines interspersed with park like ike glades form a pleasing contrast to the more rug si ged grandeur of the deep canyons canyon just passed I 1 near the top toil of the mountain one should by all means pause at the head of arch arc canyon by walking a few steps from the road one may gaze down into a curiously carved deep canyon which displays veldene slopes in the foreground but as tile the gaze lifts to farther views a curious sense of forgotten monuments is experienced perien ced as the canyon walls are carved into pillars and which stand cut clearly from the supporting sandstone walls from arch canyon one soon passes out ol of thi the huge pines and sees before him a curious cl rious notch in the skyline not far distant this promontory is called the bears beare ears eam which name is descriptive only when the twin peaks flanking the gap are seen from a distance dastil distil nee the road winds steeply down from th the P bears ears for a few mites mires to a high rim above a wide lowland low land thru which the san jun juan river has cut a deep winding gorze beyond the river canyon lies navaho alloun mountain and to the east of the mountain lies monument valley the outline ouline ef c ute mounta inin new mexico f 0 can be b een ceen to the southeast and arther north the outlines of 0 mesa verde vede ve de I 1 the roid road now bears westward following a high ridge for or about three miles abruptly the highland again i falls away toward white canyon on the north and gestand we west stand and toward sage covered flats to the southward A winding dugway soon brings the traveler to the lower benches over SCENIC SAN JUAN SCENES from page 1 which be nay may speed with a care to sand pockets as the road is now sandy at last the first of the bai bridges adges c omes into view if one knows where to look prom from the point above the camp gr ground d the edwin natural bridge is aoun visible isible v not a half mile distant but made difficult to see because 0 of the blending of its contours with the sandstone hills beyond another half mile mil le down the wind ing sandy road and one may m ay camp camil upon the canyon canyo n rim directly opposite this picturesque work of nature one may spend the evening climbing to the top of the high arch and enjoying ahe he exhilaration of fresh air and new scenes or if desired can bathe in the lower ot of two large pool rin rain water which is held in large natural basins in the bottom of the canyon no attempt should be made to visit tile other bridges without ample justice time being taken to do the trip |
