Here are the "B" team boys from South who made "All City" choices from the Scribe. Left to right are Taylor, center; Koler, halfback; Hardcastle, tackle; Elders, end; Walkingshaw, halfback and Stenstrud, guard. All --City Picked; Sooth Places Six Scribes List Outstanding "A" Gridders (Note: Some students may won-der why the "All City" was picked before the last game. The next issue of the Scribe isn't due to come out until three weeks. Watch todays game and see if you would have selected the same boys for the Scribes "All City." Ends, Carabine South Wilkinson West Both boys are excellent pass snaggers and good defensive line-men. They both have a good repu-tation for smearing the interfer-ence. Tackles, Smith East Nagle South Here are two of the biggest boys in the Big Three competition. Any ball carrier would rather go to a dentist than face the task of being tackled by these two hard driving gridders. Guards, Angelos South Bowman East Here again are two really hard driving guards. They are quite small but they tackle as hard as either Nagle or Smith. Center, Dalebout South We could stop right there, be-cause Jerry Dalebout is undoubt-edly one good center. An excel-lent tackier and blocker. Fullback, Summerhays East He has a reputation that any gridder would like. No Big Three team could stop this 195 pound back. Some teams stopped him part of the game but he managed to rip holes in most any line. Halfbacks, Adams South Dibble East Two of the fastest backs in the city. Adams for his long punt re-turns and Dibble for his fast end ' sweeps. They both added plenty to their team's success. Quarterback and Captain, Lou Dods South A constant threat and good blocker. Scribes pick him best be-cause of his outstanding leader-ship. His ability will never be doubted. Second team "All City" honors go to Keddington of South and Thomas of East at ends. Top gridders at tackles are Sheehan of West and Klebe of South. Both lads pushed the first stringers for the first team pick but needed the added push. Guards are Schofield of South and Leake of West. Clark of East gets the second nod for center. Backfield members are Story and Waters for South. Ashby and Kadder of West gain the other second string "All City" berths. South High's Cream of the Crop Yes, South high's cream of the crop as selected by the sports staff of the Scribe: Left to right are Adams, halfback; Angelos, guard; Carabine, end; Dods, quarterback; Dalebout, cen-ter and Nagle, tackle. Cub Talk By Grant Woodward Finally, after twelve years without any participation in the state playoffs, Salt Lake City schools were at last permitted to take part this year. When speak-ing of Salt Lake City schools it is " meant the team which will be the champ of the Big Three loop. There has been a great deal of talk about the City schools enter-ing into the state competition for years, but it was not until just recently that permission was granted for such a move. This permission was granted by the Board of Education after a special meeting which was held in order to determine whether or not the "City Champs" should be allowed to participate. Since the City schools withdrew from state competition 12 years ago, they have been trying to get back in, but of course after the withdrawal it was thought that the Big Three schools were no longer interested. This has been the chief difficulty in getting the consent of the Board for our par-ticipation again. The Board recently had decided to postpone their final decision on the matter until its next meeting which would have been too late to enter into the playoffs. Somehow, after a great deal of criticism and East high beating Carbon, 81-- 0, the board of education decided to hold a special meeting. At this meeting, Albert G. Zenger, who is a member of the Board and has supported athletics to the limit, secured the necessary majority to put the move over. As yet, there is no winner in the City race. Today will bring forth the winner and the winner will participate in the State play, offs. East has beaten South's "A" squad once this season and should they win again they will be the team to compete in the playoffs. However, if South should win, a means by which a "champ" is picked will have to be devised because both teams will have lost one and won one. Regardless of the team who wins the Championship, the City ' schools should be kept in the State Association. It is not only for football, but basketball and other sports as well that these state playoffs are held. The com-petition and honor offered to City teams by this move is the reason they are eager to participate. I "A" TEAM ALL CITY 1st Team 2nd Team i W. Wilkinson ..e Keddington S. S. Dods qb Ashby W. ; "B" Team Places Six; East Three; West Two Due to outstanding performances throughout the city in the "B" team league, the "All City" team has been reasonably easy so pick by the Scribe Sports staff. Koler, of South, is the unanimous choice for halfback. His out-standing passing ability and open field runnin prove him to be one . of the most valuable players in the city league. Walkingshaw of South is the other gridder at halfback, he is an excellent blocker and tackyer. Sundbury of East as quarterback. He has done a mar-velous job in quarterbacking the Leopard "B" team. As the full-back, Davis of West gets the nod. Here is a promising young gird-de- r from West and is ranked with the best. As ends Pagnallr of West and Elders of South are the Sports staff choice. Both are excellent ball snaggers besides being very efficient on the defensive side. Erickson of East, and Hardcastle of South fill the tackle berths. Guard positions are filled by Wool-le- y of East and Stenstrud of South. Last but not least is Taylor of South for center. He is another up and coming footballer both de-fensively and offensivly. It is quite impossible to pick two teams for all-cit- y on the 'B' team so honorable mentions are in line for Jenkins, Greger-so- n, Smirthwait and Ward of the hilltop school. For South, Mid-dlemi- ss, Neilson, Egbert and Cockerell gain the honorable mention choice while for West, Eccles played brilliantly. All in all the 'B' team has really enjoyed one of the big-gest seasons in league competi-tion. If most of you recall the South high junior squad in past years haven't done so well. They are all to oe congraiuiaieu. "B" TEAM ALL CITY Elders e South Hardcastle t South Wooley S East Taylor c South Stenstrud g South Erickson t East Paggnalli e West Davis fb West Koler hb South Walkingshaw hb South Sudbury qb East City Thamps' Will Be Decided Today Todays game will decide the "Champ" of the Big Three when South and East 'A' teams tangle on the South gridiron. East will enter the game as a heavy favorite because they beat the Cubs in the first tussle. They will bank all hopes on Keith Dib-l- e and Bob Summerhays. South should have something new to show tonight and they will bank all hopes on capable Neal Adams shifty taiback. The South lineup will probably be Hartmann and Carabine at ends, Mullins and McGarry at tackles. Guards will be Angelos and Long or Schofield. Schofield has been on the injury list for the past week but should see plenty of action. Jerry Dalebout, Sam president will ' hold down the pivot spot. Backfield positions will be Cap-tain Lou Dods, quarterback; Neal Adams and Morris Waters half-backs and LaMar Nagle at the fullback spot. If South wins tonight they tie East for the City Champion-ship, so Cubs lets go and put them over the top. By the way when you congra-tulate the boys make sure you get them all. The scrubs are the ones who got the regulars' in shape. Cub Midgets Walk Away With Honors The South high 'C team being the only undefeated team at South high placed six gridders on the Midget "All-City- ." Bob Dell of South and Jimmy Knell of East are "All-Cit- y" ends. Both boys are excellent pass . snaggers and good defen-sive linemen. The honor tackles posts are held down by Stan Fivas of South and Spencer Budd of East. Here are two of the hardest driving- - tackles in the Midget race. Guards are Bill Dubbeld of South and George Jouflas of East. They both have a good reputation for holding up the center of the , line. Dubbeld is also selected as honorary cap-tain for his leading the Cubs through and undefeated season. The pivot choice is Paul Ryan of West. He is an excellent cen-ter and has been the mainstay for the Panther eleven. In the backfield, South smuth-ere- d all choices. Owen Wright hard driving fullback gets the nod while, Walter Gehrke of South takes over the quarter- - back post. The Halfbacks are Bob Sidwell of South and Kenny Torp of East. Both boys are the best ball toaters in the midget league. The 'C team "All-City- " was reasonable hard to select this year because of the hot race East and South have displayed this season. Honorable mention goes to Bob Hughes, Kay Greer in the back-fiel- d for South. West high de-serves mention because of the excellent sportsmanshop the ex-hibited. (This is the second of articles outlining the outstanding athletes from South high school.) It looks as if we have some-thing for the girls in our choice as an outstand- - , well, he must weigh something. Reid entered South high with the impression that high school is all sports. Well, he flunked Eng-lish, then Algebra, etc. Last year at South, Reid estab-lished quite a record for himself. Like Neal Adams he managed to get on the "B" football team. He made "All City" (by the way girls, he's out of circulation. He recently received his draft papers). Then came basketball, and as the say-ing goes, he was still one of the fellows. We might as well call him an all around athlete. Keddington was also on Nate Long's track squad last spring. As you can see, Reid did much for South last year but much more is expected of him if Uncle Sam doesn't get him, but if he does enter the Armed force much more is expected. ing athlets. Reid Keddington, bon-ny end for Pat Ryan's "A" team completed two touchdown pars-es in the recent South-We- st "A" game of which the Cubs won 28- - 7. This highlight-ed our choice. Keddington is found most any place except on Capitol Hill (Don't worry girls, he'll get there). He is tall, dark and ????? He weighs about Hofmann's Still Rate Best Hear ye! Hear ye! Many South high students have been playing in the Boys' gym without gym shoes and many boys have been seen wearing that same "ole" gym suit. Well boys, there may be a war on but your troubles are over as far as sportswear is concerned. Hofmann's Hardware, 206 South f - State Street, still have a big var-iety of boys' gym trunks and gym shoes. Remember, if its SPORTS' WEAR you want, well, you know 4 where to go. |
