Show Bonnie Hodgson Essay Winner At Irving High Fourteen - year - old Bonnie Hodgson, ninth grade student at Irving High, was judged winner win-ner in the annual Service Star Legion essay contest held in the school auditorium Wednesday Wednes-day morning. Miss Hodgson's winning essay, es-say, "The Land Where Men Are Free," was selected over the essays of the five other finalists: final-ists: Patricia Solon, Gary Chris-tensen, Chris-tensen, Ann Eldredge, Don Sip-kema Sip-kema and Marian Johnson. An original essay in poetic form, the winning piece treated the subject of the debt we, the living, liv-ing, owe to the nameless dead who fought the wars of liberty and justice that we might live in peace in this great land. Edits School Paper Bonnie Hodgson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Hodgson, 2486 South 15th East, is the editor ed-itor of Irving's school paper, The Irving Ink. Complete text of her essay is on page 5. All ninth grade students at Irving composed essays for the contest during the last two weeks. The finalists were chosen chos-en by the English instructors. Contests were held at all junior jun-ior high schools throughout the city this week. Winners from these schools, including Miss Hodgson, will compete in the Service Star Legion Essay finals at Memory Grove Monday, March 15, to determine the city finalist. The program Wednesday morning was conducted bv Barbara Bar-bara Buehner, vice president of the student body. Mrs. A.. C. Curtis, "Mother of Irving," and a member of the Service Star Legion, gave an extemporaneous extemporane-ous talk. W. Fred Arbogast, principal, also spoke. Musical numbers were presented pre-sented by the school orchestra under the direction of Mrs. Lee-Master, Lee-Master, in the absence of Mr. Martin, regular director; sextette, sex-tette, led by Mss Ivie J. En.-sign; En.-sign; an instrumental number by Renee Tapp. Ronald Kelsch presented the chairman. |
