Show Even Pioneers Were Confused Siiffar House Or Sugarhouse . . ? Sugar House this year is celebrating her 100th anniversary as an established community and for 100 years it seems people have been confused as to the correct spelling. ) Here is the issue. Aware for several weeks that there was a wide difference of understanding among residents and business people of the community as to the correct spelling, The Bulletin decided to make a survey of 50 tradespeople to determine just how wide the gap actually was. Of the fifty people interviewed, 33 stated they believed the correct spelling was "Sugarhouse." Seventeen said, "Sugar House." This initial survey seemed to indicate that local townspeople towns-people believed three to one that the correct spelling was as one word: "Sugarhouse." We immediately set to work to determine just how the issue stood with different people. Miss Aurelia Bennion of the Sprague Library said that the early founders of the community were themselves them-selves "undecided about the spelling of the name of their own town." She added that she preferred the two-word spelling. Ray D. Free, local Chamber of Commerce president, stated that .- he favored the "Sugar House" spelling, also. Consulting the telephone directory, we discovered that of the 30 businesses employing the name, 28 used the two-word spelling, ) while only two used the one-word spelling. In going through the historical documents prepared by Hiram Young at the Sprague Library, we discovered that the early pioneers pi-oneers interviewed by Mr. Young used both spellings indiscrim-iniately." indiscrim-iniately." A check with the post office people showed that they use the "Sugarhouse'' spelling in their work. Postmaster I. A. Smoot affirmed af-firmed this. Incidentally, one of Mr. Smoot's distinguished fore-bearers, fore-bearers, "Ma" Smoot is credited with naming the community. Mr. Smoot said that he did not know the official spelling, however. In order to come to an agreement The Bulletin has set a deadline dead-line of July 1, 194S, in which to decide the issue. Readers who have evidence one way or another are invited to send it in. If necessary if the problem becomes heated enough The Bulletin will sponsor an official poll on the spelling of Sugar House . . . or Sugarhouse. |
