Show Voice Poll Lists K. Smith Tops Kate Smith, who is featured fea-tured on Mutual's weekday week-day "Kate Smith Speaks" presentations, is described as having the "sincerest voice" by Arthur Lessac, the director of the National Nation-al Academy of Vocal Arts. He claims that "Most women's wo-men's voices sound like the screech of peacocks," but that Miss Smith won the academy nod "As the possessor pos-sessor of the sincerest voice. The "most nompous" voice was attributed by the Academy to Sen. Owen Brewster of Main, the most paternal" to Francis Cardinal SpeHman, the "most friendly" to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the "most grating" to Rep. John Rankin of Mississippi. Caterpillars, Ants, Spiders Were Delicacies to Romans Have yo.u ever wondered how certain foods found their way into our kitchens? Of course not everything that has been eaten in the past is considered edible today. For, according to one story of food firsts, the Romans Ro-mans ate caterpillars with gusto and reported that they tasted like almonds, And epicures in the days of the Caesars also liked ants fried with sugar and butter, and claimed spiders were delicious. But the Ro- mans started every meal with eggs and it is from them that we get our custom of beginning the day with an egg dish of some sort. In all the stories of pioneering pioneer-ing in food, there's only one credited cred-ited to a woman. It was an Englishwoman, Eng-lishwoman, a Mrs. Clements, who, in the time of George I, discovered the goodness of mus-j tard and she did it by mistake. ! One day Mrs. Clements ran out of coffee. Bent on finding a substitute, sub-stitute, she put some mustard seed into her coffee mill and brewed the result. For quite a while she was certain that she had found a wonderful substitute substi-tute for coffee. Then one day she happened to spill some of her newly discovered drink on her plate. It soaked into her meat. And after that, Mrs. Clements' Clem-ents' long-suffering family did not have to drink mustard any more. They had it on their beef! |
