I A VISION COMING TRUE NnirfY' four years have elapsed since the the settlement of Utah began by pioneers vho, like the children of Israel, braved the unknown terrors of a trek to the west in: Search of a land where they could be free to J worship their God. Much is made of American freedom; freedom of speech; freedom of the press and freedom to worship a Supreme Being in any manner seen fit. But, since the day the Pilgrims Pil-grims landed on these shores, that freedom of worship has been a misnomer. Certainly you could worship as you pleased, but, be sure you worshipped as the majority did or you were branded a heretic and an infidel. Joseph Smith had as good a right to have a vision as any of the patriarchs of old but his did not coincide with the prevailing pre-vailing religion so he and his followers were persecuted. They came to the unclaimed, untamed un-tamed west, there they set up a state government gov-ernment and above all things kept their belief be-lief in American traditions, American love of country, alive. The Mormons carved out of the desert a homeland which stands out in American annals an-nals as the home of western irrigation, range restoration, water conservation. During the struggle to make all men free and equal they were on the Union side. In struggles which have taken place since then they have freely given of their young men, their riches and equipment. ' They have instituted palaces of learning, created cities which are a delight to the eye and made the desert blossom. Now that the state is the center and headquarters of one of the largest schemes this government govern-ment has ever undertaken, range consei va-tion va-tion and restoration. Sugar beets, a basic food product of the west, had its beginning here, the first sugar mill in this country for the manufacture of sugar from beets was set up in Sugar House, Utah.
