Show EHS Principal Says Changes Are Coming By GARY R. BLODGETT Clipper News Editor BOUNTIFUL - There are going to be a lot of changes in the Davis School District in the next few years -- for both teachers and students. "EDUCATION among students is going to be more competitive than ever before." said Bountiful High Principal Don Perkins in an address last week to the Bountiful Area Chamber of Commerce. "At the same time, education is going to be a total commitment on the part of all teachers. It's going to require more dedication dedica-tion and conviction in what they are doing." he said. HE NOTED that everyone wants quality education: and to provide this under adverse conditions - will require more cooperation between teachers, parents and students. "Parents are now' becoming more involved, in-volved, actually volunteering their time and talent, and this is what is needed for successful education." he told the Chamber. Cham-ber. "Outside pressures will become greater grea-ter and greater." HE EMPHASIZED that the outside pressures press-ures are not only bad influences (alcohol and drugs), but include parent and student i pressures for special privileges, additional elective classes, etc. "At the same time, we've got to provide a well-balanced curriculum for all students -including vocational education, advanced placement programs, and computer-oriented computer-oriented classes. HE SAID IT is going to be necessary for the (Davis School) District to revise its present pre-sent six-hour per day class schedule to accommodate student and parent wishes for an cxccllcrated education. Mr. Perkins praised the computer system now used by schools as being a landmark for career and class scheduling. "NOW IT'S possible to register a student in a few minutes with a minimum number of class changes." he said. "But more important impor-tant is the use of the computer for career counseling. "With the use of computers, we can guide ' a student into any career field with all the vital information needed - colleges offering certain courses, credits necessary, tuition, housing, etc. Everything is up to dale and accurate. We no longer have to refer to brochures for college information." MR. PERKINS suggested that starting teachers be paid more and that experienced teachers be graded on a "ladder system" and the more productive teachers paid accordingly. |
