Show Union Enters Big Tourney By Winning Play-off It took a couple of more tough ball games for Union High School to gain entrance into the big Class "B" basketball tournament that started yesterday, March 16, but those Cougars are back again in the big show for the fourth consecutive year. It was just two years ago that a gang of unheralded un-heralded kids went unnoticed into the meet, and four days later they were king of the prep circles, cir-cles, having beaten the entire field to win the Class "B" title. The tough games the Cougars won were in the Region Five playoff play-off at Union last Thursday and Friday evening when San Juan, Monticella, Altamont and Union met to decide the third entry from the Region at Provo. The Cougars were definitely off form the first night and were pressed all the way by a fine Monticello team before winning a close 42-40 decision. After holding San Juan in check the first half and piling up a commanding com-manding 25-18 lead in the second game, the Longhorns from Altamont Alta-mont lost their power in the second sec-ond half and the Broncos beat the third place team from Uintah division di-vision 45-43. Another Close One j After Monticello took the opening open-ing game from Altamont Friday, j the Blanding Broncs and Union j Cougars hooked up in another contest that was an almost duplicate dupli-cate of the first night game between be-tween the Cougars and Monticello. It was a see-saw ball game until the final quarter when Union began be-gan working a bit more smoothly, and pulled ahead to win 60-42. Norman Hanson was the boy who kept the Cougars in the ball game the first night, and big Rulon Gilbert was the key man on the Union team on Friday. He did a bang-up job on defense and scored 14 points, the same number num-ber Hanson got the first night Packy Fenn led all scoring with 19 the second game. Union met Parowan, Millard winners, in the first round Wednesday Wed-nesday at 3 p.m. at Provo. |
