Show CLIFF MEMMOTT. Editor Maybe We Should Ask Questions. . . A few days ago a fast-talking and talented high-pressure book salesman, representing a publishing company, brought the American Educator Encyclopedia into several homes in the Uintah Basin ... As usual this smooth, per. suasive salesman had perfected a "line" that is so common among some salesmen. He said a lot of things as he prepared pre-pared his client for the kill. But,, among the high-pressure thoughts he advanced, was the one that "rated the books he was selling with the top reference library on any comparative com-parative list." As a clincher sales trick, Mr. Salesman said the set of books would go' on the market in about three weeks for 5210 for the 10-volume set. "However," he said, "just for you and only the next two weeks, through a special advertising ad-vertising scheme, a few chosen families could purchase the set for $129.00, and receive an 8-volume set of children's books free." Not until after the "salesman had closed the deal, had the signed contract, taken the customer's check and gone on his way rejoicing, did some of his customers decide to check with some of the authorities to see just what they had gotten themselves into. What they found was very distasteful. In checking on the comparative list at Union High School library, and with one of Utah's universities, it was found the enclycopedia is very mediocre. The most unkindest cut of all was the fact that anyone could buy the whole set for $79.50. . . Pretty expensive "Free" books, isn't it? This sort of misrepresentation is not only hard on the uninformed public, but makes it very difficult for the honest companies represented by fair salesmen. There is a way that John Q. Public can protect himself him-self on "Deals" like this one. Why not ask some informed person about the product a fast-talking salesman is trying to peddle? While on the subject of books next time someone some-one wants to sell you a set of any kind of reference books, why not call the librarian at Union High School?. . . she is trained in her work, and if she doesn't know off-hand, she has access to all kinds of charts that will give the answer. . . That's one precaution, and another one would be to insist that such a salesman should have a "Blue ' Card" from the Chamber of Commerce. Their responsibility is to help the people of the community from being swindled. v E v Casually Observing . . . . SORRY Recently this column carried a comment relating to wrestling window cards placed by two rival promoters of wrestling matches hi Roosevelt' and Vernal. . . I took the Vernal promoter to task for allegedly replacing his window cards for those of the Roosevelt matches Since the article was published, I find the Vernal individual was unjustly accused and knew nothing of the supposed removal of cards advertising matches in Roosevelt. It was-inferred, was-inferred, in my" comments that the Vernal promoter, or someone working for. him was responsible for removing local cards. . . If I were inadequately informed, then I most humbly apologize for the injustice done the Vernal wrestling promoter. . '. CHRISTMAS is just around the corner and ' stores are rapidly, taking' on the Holiday Look I would like to suggest' all of us" do our Christmas shopping in the Uintah Basin, where the profits from your purchases will be plowed back into supporting our schools, roads, and other activities that build our. counties and cities. You might have the idea you can beat" prices elsewhere, but if we'll figure our time taken and cost of a trip out of town, then the savings will be greater when we S-H-O-P in our own hometown. . . CONGRATULATIONS are in order to DAVID Huish, who is celebrating 50 years in the drug store business Dave was recognized in the current issue of the American Druggist, which carried a story and picture of the man, who with his son, Robert, owns and operates the Huish Rexall Drug store in Roosevelt That's a long time to be identified with any single kind of business you gotta like what you're doing to stick with it for half of a century. . . MORE ORCHIDS to Fort Duchesne American Legion Post who were cited last weekend at the Commanders' Com-manders' and Adjutants' conference in Salt Lake, for having achieved 210 over their quota of members for the current cur-rent year They lead the state department of Utah. 30 |
