Show Former War Secretary Ponders Vital U. S. Defense Issues Warning that New-York can be the next Pearl Harbor, former for-mer Secretary of War Robert Patterson .. urges - le United States to begin immediately a "broad, comprehensive plan of defense against' sudden attack," declaring that the nation's military mili-tary strength "is hopelessly Inadequate," The people of this country will probably brush off the questions asked by Mr. Patterson but there is just a chance that he is correct cor-rect in saying that "World War III lies dead ahead," unless we drop our "business as usual attitude." at-titude." The questions asked by the former Cabinet official and' released re-leased recently for publication include: Who will run the Government if an atomic bomb explodes on Washington, destroying the Capitol Cap-itol and the White House and killing most of our high-ranking officials? "Who is going to evacuate civilian ci-vilian populations from bombed-out bombed-out areas? "Who will set up and direct aid stations and hospitals for radiation victims? "Who will decide upon and handle dispersement of vital industries in-dustries in our rich and private industrial areas when the bombs begin to fall? "Will the Army have its own equipment available for troop movements, while other rolling stock is being used for evacuation evacua-tion of civilian populations? Admitedly these questions seem far-fetched and the answers may not be very pressing. Nevertheless, Nev-ertheless, no one knows exactly what might take place in this world and it behooves the people peo-ple of the United States, if they value their freedom, liberty and independence, to take some thought of what the morrow may hold. |
