Show Predictions On '49 Meat Supply Varying Widely There's a sharp . difference, of opinion between government experts ex-perts and private market observers observ-ers over how: the future meat supply will stack up. At Chicago, a livestock marketing, mar-keting, expert predicts things aren't gtiing to be too easy for the consumer. But the view of the Department of Agriculture is more optimistic. . . The market , expert is H. M. Conway of .the National Livestock Live-stock Producer's magazine. He writes that the large marketings j of range , cattle and lambs can result, in only one thing: . A substantial sub-stantial curtailment in meat during dur-ing the coming spring. Wheat" pastures in the southwest south-west are , scanty this fall because of a lack of moisture, and Conway Con-way says this will cut production ! of fat cattle and lambs. Hog marketings are not up to par, according to the Chicagoan. He says "producers are holding back, expecting to feed cheap corn later in 'the season. If thai trend is general, the early marketing mar-keting of 1949 pork supplies would be delayed, possibly until summer. ' ' - But right there is where Conway Con-way and the USDA differ .... The department says farmers are feeding hogs to heavier weights,, but that this will tend to stretch out the pork supply over a relatively long period. Department officials observe that pork1 is now relatively low in price,7 probably as low as it will get in a considerable length of time. V |
