Show Forest Officials State Hules For Xmas Tree Cutting Christmas trees for' local use may be secured from the Ashley national, forest only under sale of free use ' permit. Trees to be removed will be marked or designated des-ignated by a forest officer and cutting confined to restricted units, un-its, the Ashley forest office announced an-nounced this week. ; Lodgepole pine trees are plentiful, plen-tiful, but are not used extensively extensive-ly locally for Christmas-trees. The Alpine fir, which may be cut,: is the main, conifer ' species on the forest most desirable for Christmas trees. Alpine fir is not, however, abundant on the forest and is usually - only accessible during the early part of the winter season. sea-son. Pointing out that promiscuous cutting would seriously impair the watersheds and destroy the asthetic values in the accessible canyons because of the removal of the choice shrubs and trees, Forest Service officials cited the following section of the U. C. Criminal Code: . "Section 50 of the Criminal Code, makes it a criminal offence of-fence punishable by a fine of not more than $500 or imprisonment imprison-ment for not more than a year, or both fine and imprisonment, to unlawfully cut, or. aid in Unlawfully Un-lawfully cutting, or to wantonly injure or destroy, or procure to be wantonly injured or destroyed, destroy-ed, any tree growing, standing, or being upon land of the United Slates which has been reserved or purchased for public use." The cutting of Christmas trees falls within the category of forest for-est management, and to accomplish accomp-lish proper management, the local lo-cal district ranger should be contacted con-tacted before cutting is attempted attempt-ed on the forest, the Ashley supervisor's su-pervisor's office explained. |
