Show Engineer Gives Data On Present Oil Shale Plans Prospects of the oil shale industry, in-dustry, as compared to three years ago, are excellent, Russell Cameron, engineer with the Rifle Ri-fle experiment plant said in an address here. In explaining the mining; extraction ex-traction and manufacture of oil from shale, Mr. Cameron said the mining operation is most difficult, dif-ficult, and that a successful I cheap method of mining is badly needed. With an automatic drill carriage, four holes are drilled in the shale at one time, speeding speed-ing up operations, and a recently recent-ly introduced augur type of drill also has improved operations, opera-tions, Mr. Cameron stated. With the deeper holes which an augur drill makes, explosive powder can be better utilized, he said. Mr. Cameron explained the types of extractions of oil, which include the use of a catalyst, and methods of refining. Development Develop-ment of shale oil was, during the war, a military maneuver, and it is still being watched by military mili-tary authorities, he stated. Pres-jent Pres-jent refineries, now being used largely for experimental work, I could be successfully developed into refineries for practical use. he added. "sfSB Particularly encouraging to those conducting experiments on shale are computations on the probable costs of making shale into commercial oil, Mr. Cam-Icron Cam-Icron told the group. However, he said that shale is not crude petroleum, and that one of the problems in connection with shale is separation of the oil from the nitrogen and sulphur contained in the rock. Henry A. Wallace, candidate for President on the Progressive ticket: "The need for the Progressive Party is greater than ever before." |
