Show BURGLARY ATT EMPT NITS BETS YOUTH BULLET AND POISON TERM exciting citing arrest and speedy trial for young store burglar t late shoppers and theater crowds on saturday evening were provided with a bit of metropolitan excitement when weslie winn 21 was discovered in the act of burglarizing M martin a r t I 1 n Thor sens drug store and was shot through the hand before submitting to arrest apparently taking advantage of the noise made by firecrackers exploding near the store winn had broken broker ithe the glass of the front entrance and crawled inside but was detected by two girls who quickly spread the alarm in but a few moments a large crowd had surrounded the building making escape practically impossible realizing his predicament he attempted to force his way through the rear door but not being able to operate the bolts ran to the front of the store and threw a large pre specimen through one of the large show windows in the evident hope of being able to break past the crowd outside seeing that escape there however was impossible the young burglar again went to the back of the store refusing to surrender when night officer niels jensen who was at the front door commanded him to come out officer jensen who had difficulty in negotiating an entrance to the store shot once over winns head in an effort to dislodge him winn however did not come out of the back room until the officer and three others had finally gained entrance and were nearing his place of concealment he then rushed out with an uplifted hammer threatening to brain jensen who was in lead forced to act quickly the officer shot winn through the hand and the chase was over witnesses of the shooting and arrest speak admiringly of officer jensens hensens Jen sens coolness and judgment in stopping winn as he rushed fion the rear of the store they point out that when they entered the store they had no way of knowing whether the burglar was armed and in the short moment of the final rush many officers might not have taken the chance of picking a less vital spot than the broad expanse of a chest best to shoot at winn was brought before justice of the peace S G dark clark but on waiving preliminary hearing the papers in his case were transferred to the district court on monday afternoon he was arraigned before judge N J bates of the sixth judicial district court pleaded guilty to a charge of second degree burglary and was waa sentenced to the state prison for not less than one year and not more than twenty years sheriff V M fairbanks took him up to salt lake the same day to begin his sentence saturday evenings burglary was the second one during the last month the richfield drug store having been entered and robbed of valuable merchandise on the night of june 6 but whether young winn had any connection with the former case was apparently not disclosed during the investigation vesti gation |
