| Show gill independence DAY celebration is HELD IN mm local baseball team wins over scipio nine by a score of 14 to 4 richfield succeeded yesterday irl in recapturing the spirit of an old fashioned fourth of july in celebrating the nations birthday from the time the salute was fired at daybreak until the last strains of the dance orchestra died out this morning something was waa happening almost every minute to enliven the day for days a tempo of excitement had been built up by the incessant noise of firecrackers shoppers had filled the stores and shops to prepare for the occasion W B pace had tried to stop traffic when he gave away a bicycle to one of the hundreds of kiddies who had registered for it W 0 cluff had worn out two pairs of shoes chasing after committees floats and donations and by tuesday evening everyone knew the stage was set for an unusual celebration aroused early by the sunrise salute citizens ate their breakfasts to the serenading sere of M L done and his band hustled themselves and the kiddies oft off to the parade and thereafter wondered if it would ever be possible to get all of the family td together gether again the parade made up of the band a contingent from the national guard and miniature floats drew large crowds who applauded enthusiastically as the many beautiful entries passed so uniformly excellent were the floats that the judges were unable to select first second and third place floats but instead felt forced to make six I 1 equal awards to the following fourth ward primary miss utah seledia ledas Sel Se edaa beauty shop meriden menden halls telluride power co and home acceptance corporation patriotic exercises in the stake tabernacle immediately following the parade were well attended carvel mattsson as speaker of the day held the rapt attention of his bis audience in pointing out the analogy between the present sting gle of bf the nation natia n and that of its founders musical numbers on ontee program were rendered tb bysom band lynn fawns and marlell L christensen invocation was of by rev S H hi maxwell and the benediction b by dr E W poulson kiddies sports in the afternoon as usual attracted much interests interest as did the bathing revue at the natatorium lum prizes were awarded to the following entrants in the bathing revue misses mary snow naomi ence gail steiner and dorothy Christo pherson carol dean baker won the junior prize swimming races were held later in the day and first places were won by the following boys hogarth barton kimball thurston maurice martines Martl nes kaye morrison and max riley in the girls event the following came first in their races darlene martines Mar lines dorothy ward margaret poulson tP and patricia beal the lions club added to the pleasure of the little tots tota by sponsoring a free childrens dance and distributing candy A band concert in the evening followed by an excellent display of fireworks that drew an immense crowd then a dance at el capitan capatan rounded out a perfect day unmarred by the report of serious accident much muc h credit is duo chairman W a 0 cluff and his committees for the splendid manner in which they organized and arranged the facilities of the community for the celebration not least among the attractions of the day was the baseball game between scipio and richfield at 4 p m which the local boys easily won 14 0 5 by playing errorless ball scipio broke the ice in he first inning by scoring one run rim but their lead was shortly overcome and by the end of the afif fifth th frame stan johnsons crew was safely out in front 14 to 4 joe buys accounted for the final run in the eighth with a home run over the center fielders head winkel and miller divided the pitching assignment and both did very well as did the entire richfield team at the bat being idle as far as league play is concerned until july 15 attempts are being made to schedule e exhibition games here for next sunday and wednesday one of the teams from the southwestern utah league will be invited here for sunday and joseph will probably play next wednesday both games particularly the sunday offering should be of interest to the fans |
