Show Drift To Apartments Is the one-family home giving wav to the apartment house as a place of habitation? A survey covering 302 cities of more than 25,000 population recently ended by the Department of Labor, indicates that there is a well-defined well-defined trend in that direction. It discloses that 53 per cent of city dwellers dwel-lers live in apartments, as contrasted with only 24 per cent eight years ago. Commenting on this situation, A. E. Dickinson, president of the Indiana Limestone company, observes that in both apretment house and single-family home construction there is a marked improvement noticeable in the permancy of the structures being erected, and adds: "There is no longer long-er any place in the general building program for flimsy construction." In view of the staggering fire losses which occur each year, involving also an appalling loss of life, the tendency toward better construction methods is an encouraging sign. From the standpoint of safety alone, to sav f nothing of the greater economy in the long run, every class of building should be made as nearly ire-proof ' as practicable. : It is possible that the drift to apartments apart-ments is due in some measure to the belief that their construction is such as to afford greater safety to their occupants. |
