Show Vi Maple Canyon Road Will Soon Be Built as Citizens Want It Citizens of Moroni, Chester, Freedom Free-dom and Jerusalem attended a mass meeting and free show, July 23, 1929, donated by the courtesy of Marvin Anderson of the Kozy Theatre for the purpose of pledging labor and money to match the appropriation of Sanpete County Commissioners to build an auto road into Maple Canyon. The total of the pledges was not available at the time of this writing but was estimated by the Committee to be about $1000.00. This in addition to $100.00 appropriation by Moroni City leaves but $400.00 to be raised to match the county appropriation of $1500.00. Assurances were given by many in attendance at the meeting that if more labor than they pledged was required they would willingly give it to see the project completed as far as possible this year. The road work is now considered assured and will be started as soon as the engineer assigned to make the surveys and start construction can be released from other work by the Forest For-est Service which we understand will be about August 10th to 20th. The total amount now pledged to construction work on the Maple Canyon Can-yon road approximates $5000.00 as follows: $1500.00 by the United States Forest Service, which does not include the services of the engineer for the surveying of the complete road; $1500. by Sanpete County Commissioners; $1400.00 by public spirited citizens of the surrounding towns and villages; $100.00 by Moroni City, and the loan of equipment by the Utah State Road Commission which is conservatively estimated at $500.00. Lion District Governor P. L. Hol-man Hol-man of Mount Pleasant, the new District Dis-trict Governor of Lions International for Utah and Idaho, was the principal speaker at the mass meeting. Other speaker were the newly elected Presi-dnt Presi-dnt of the Moroni Lions Club James Prestwich and Lion Ellis A. Draper of the Moroni Club. "The Utah Trail" was beautifully rendered by Mrs. Vanorma Anderson and Leona Irons, accompanied by Mrs. Fay Draper. A parody appropriate to Maple Canyon Can-yon was composed for the occasion. This was a decided hit and was largely applauded and encored by the appreciative appre-ciative audience. |
