The salute was fired by France at Qulberon Bay on February 14, 1778 and by it France recognized the new nation. Just 118 years ago on August 24, 1814 the Secretary of the Navy Na-vy ordered the burning of the Navy Na-vy Yard, Washington, D. C, tu prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy. During the War of 1812, Robert Fulton blew a ship up in the New York harbor with a torpedo launched from a submarine. The victorious Bon Homme Rich ard sank after her battle with the Separis, and John Paul Jones sailed away from the scene of battle commanding the ship which he had defeated. The first steam man-of-war ever ev-er launched was the U. S. S. Fulton Ful-ton in 1814 and the first screw propeller warship was the U. S. S. Princeton in 1843. The ironclad had its beginning in the Crimean war in which it was used by the French who covered cov-ered the hulls of the Lave, Ton-nante Ton-nante and Levastation with 4 inches in-ches of iron armor. Mount Vernon, the home and estate es-tate of George Washington, undoubtedly un-doubtedly the most famous shrine in American history, was named after Admiral Edward Vernon of the British Navy. The estate was owned by Lawrence Vernon, half brother of George, whose admira-! admira-! tion for the English Admiral induced in-duced him to call the estate Mount Vernon. Later the property was ! willed to George Washington.
