Show The California Market Wants Utah Poultry Utah farmers are losing a splendid splen-did opportunity to furnish southern south-ern California with a large percentage per-centage of her heavy meat fouls, Albertus Willardson, Los Angeles, former chief of the federal farm boards poultry products section, declared during a visit in Salt Lake City recently. A survey made by Mr. Willardson Willard-son shows that southern California Califor-nia is importing over 8,000,000 pounds of colored poultry annually from sources far ' more distant than Utah. The bulk of these importations im-portations are made from the middle west and come right through Utah en route to market. About half of the colored poultry poul-try imported into southern California Calif-ornia each year is dressed, while the other half is alive, a situaticn which affords an ideal market foi Utah products, since this state ships both live and dressed birds, the visitor asserted. At the present time, Utah raises very few commercial chickens ol the heavy meaty type, but concentrates con-centrates on the production of egg producers, particularly the white leglioi lis. x u raise mui e coiui eu ; meat birds in this state would not affect the Los Angeles market for the white leghorn cockerels and culled hens materially, since these birds are imported anyway he explained. With the cheap food and proximity proxi-mity to the market. Utah would have a decided advantage over practically all other states in the production of the colored birds and in moving them to Los Angeles An-geles market. The eight Southern California counties included in Mr. Willard-son's Willard-son's survey, have a population oi 3,000,000 consumers, and the center cen-ter of the area is only about 800 miles from Salt Lake City. This advise has been given tc the poultrymen of Utah on several occasions, and since Washington, Iron and Beaver and other counties coun-ties near the market do not take advantage of this opportunity the poultrymen in other sections ol the state who have been supplying supply-ing the trade with millions of Utah Milk White eggs and spring broilers, should engage in furnishing furnish-ing the Los Angeles trade witli the heavy meat fowls. Why not? |
