Show An Explanation The following communication is an explanation relative to fruit jars: Kerr Glass Mfg. Corp. Sand Springs, Oklahoma ! Johansen Bros. Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Gentlemen: With reference to complaints from housewives in your territory of foods put up in Kerr Caps and Lids wish to advise that while hundreds of thousands of housewives over the country have used Kerr Jars and Caps for the past twenty years 0 more with good success, experience shows that with any make of jar or cap occasional complaints should be expected. As complaints have reached us they have always been thoroughly investigated with the thought in mind that benefit may be derived and improvement made. A few complaints similar to the ones in your territory Have come to; our attention and some of the: canned products have been sent to us. On opening these we found some that were perfect, others had varying degrees of odor, or taste, but it was found that generally upon ! reheating the contents of these jars, that is, preparing them as you would for the table, the condition was changed and the goods eatable. (We have not found this trouble where products were canned by the-open the-open kettle method.) We have had an analysis made of these foods by competent chemists and their statements shows that while all the foods were sterile and in good condition, there was an odor of mineral oil upon opening, which they advise is not poisonous or even harmful, but that upon reheating re-heating the odor was not detected. The temperature at no time exceeded exceed-ed 200 dgrees. A thorough investigation of the matter has been made to determine the exact cause and it has been determined de-termined that Some lot of mineral oil which is one of the ingredients used in the manufacture of the sealing seal-ing composition was not up to standard and steps have been taken to avoid the possibility of a recurrence recur-rence and you may rest assured of the same good success with the use of Kerr Jars and Caps in the future fu-ture as in the past. After a long period of research work and as a result of experience gained over a long period of years, there has been dveloped an improvement improve-ment in Ker Taps and Lids making mak-ing them so far superior to those that have been manufactured in :he past tha we aro calling in all the Caps and Lids in the hands of all jobbers throughout the United States, in order to get the new im-nrcved im-nrcved caps and lids in the hands of the housewivees at the earliest possible date. This of course will be a tremendous job, being we be-! be-! belive never attempted before by at least a jar manufacturer We will appreciate it if you will kindly pass this information along to any person interested, which might prevent them from losing more of their canned foods than is necessary. Appreciating your interest manifested mani-fested and thanking you for your fine cooperation, we trust you will not hesitate at any time we can be of any service to you, we are, Sincerely yours, Kerr Glass Mfg.
