Show Commentary Leave The Inks Change The Spout By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports For years everyone simply went out and played and enjoyed all the different sports in the world but lately the move has turned to changing all the rules that govern the various sports. EVERYONE is jumping on the bandwagon in an effort to get the rules changed. I'm not one for changing the rules. No sir not this guy. But I would like to see some changes in the basic sports to make them more interesting. So rather than change the little things, like rules, let's simply change the entire sport for the betterment of mankind. Here are a few simple changes. Remember rules are made to be broken anyway but this way everyone still has a chance to break the rules but they will still have to live within the framework of the sport itself. BASEBALL. A good place to start, with the nations so-called national past-time. Enough has been made about the designated hitter rule, who cares who strikes out. Let's leave it three strikes and you're out and four balls and you get a free walk. I can even live with the nine innings with three outs per team style of play. If you really want to get some excitement back into baseball simply take away the mitts. I'm not a barbarian by any means so let the catcher still wear his mitt but take all the others. Now the third baseman will really be at the hot box. Routine fly balls would be a thing of the past. Think of all the runs that would score, after all isn't that what baseball is all about. SOCCER. Seems like the American public is really down on this sport on the professional level simply because there just aren't enough goals scored. Simple, all we have to do is make the goals bigger. For arguments sake let's make the goals about five times as large as they currently are, there isn't a human alive that could play goalie under those circumstances. There is another option to this change, all we would have to do is make the goalkeepers play with blindfolds on. " 6 Basketball. The little guy has gonef, ' sport so to bring him back let's just J $! basket to six feet. Those bigger guysca.! "h the thing already at ten feet so lowering wouldn't affect their game but by 0We" the hoop we can get the smaller gUys - j action more. This way who cares if l plays a zone or man to man, who even ' they take a quarter and a half to shooing rl Just think of the awesome slam dunki-will dunki-will be going on. S TENNIS. I've always felt this was, 2 game but it had one flaw and we can ch that in a hurry. All we do to tennisistake-the tennisistake-the net. Now we'll get some awesome-! ! and volleys. Talk about long rallies matches will take days to play. Action L name of the game for the fans and withou- 1 the tennis players could give us plenty '(? tion. i Golf. This sport probably needs the I" work, at least my golf game does. Then Vc many options but the best one of all is tC 'l the hole bigger. Face it no one really A who or why the size of the actual hole i '-jp about but the guy blew it, it's too small ' W EVERYONE gets excited about mij long putt and with our new rule a lot , people would come back for their next ri feeling good knowing they sank mostof! putts the last time out. Football. The easy thing to do would; ' . 5 take the pads away but then all you would! 1 H 1 is another rugby game. No, I have abetter let's only give the offense four downs tosi ! ; j touchdown. This way we don't have the Hi cials trying to figure out where to spot the jJJ all the way down the field they only havet ' it once. THE BIG PLUS though would be tk '. only four downs the basic four yards a J cloud of dust offense that we all hate, e; J the Ohio State fans, would become exiii " There you have it,-not your basic changes but rather changes in the bask 3 j; cept of the games that I feel would real; out. ; " |
