Show Spring Meadows Golf Course Combines Old And New Holes By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports WEST BOUNTIFUL - There's a new golf course in town. Well to be truthful with everyone every-one the course has been around for awhile but now they offer nine new holes of golf. Well, that's not exactly all the truth either, some of the holes are new and some are old. ONE THING we can say for sure though is that all the holes on the Spring Meadows course are now located on the east side of the street. Toni Olsen, the professional at the course, was told by the owners that he should come up with a nine hole course utilizing just the property prop-erty on the east side of the street a couple of years ago and to that end he came up with the design now in effect. Toni is there to serve his members and after the associations, both men and women, played the course the members had their input and a few changes are probably going to take place. It could have been easy for Toni to just sit pat on his new course but that's not his style. He listened to the members and their suggestions and then came up with the revisions. FIRST OF all lets take a look at the new course, the way Toni first opened it up to play Saturday, July 16 for the first annual Blow Out event which was a scotch tournament featuring the members of both his associations and their partners. Hole number one. A straight 365 yard par four hole that still featured out of bounds on the right and the water on the left. Two bunkers guard the right side of the fairway which had a nasty habit of swallowing the balls off the long hitters off the tee. According to many this was a birdie hole, this reporter even got one there which really leads people to believe it was an easy hole. ' HOLE NUMBER two. A definite dogleg to the left. Some players used an iron to drive to the middle of the fairway near the old number one green and then another iron to hit into the green. Others choose to drive over the water and trees and tried to drive the green. The card notes this as a 325 yard par 4 but it plays much shorter if the golfer plays the driver over the water. The green is the old number two green. Hole number three. This is the hole that has caused the concern. It lists as a 450 yard par 5 hole, which it probably is measuring the farthest farth-est points in each case but many of the members mem-bers have indicated the hole is much shorter. It's a definite turn to the right hole, this isn't a dogleg, it's more like a 90 degree turn. The plans right now are to turn this into a par four. Too many people were getting eagle threes, this guy even did it, which seemed to catch everyone's attention. As a par four it would be a good golf hole since on the drive there is out of bounds right and straight ahead, then on the second shot it's OB right and left with a couple of bunkers guarding the green. HOLE NUMBER four. A 3 15 yard par four that the big hitters have been driving. The main thing on this hole is to be straight since there is OB both right and left with bunkers jumping up all over the place. Hole number five. Right now this 305 yard par four hole isn't much of a challenge to the big sticks because they can go all out to drive the green. Toni has plans though of putting a huge bunker in front of the green that will gobble gob-ble up any ball that tries to roll onto the green. When this bunker is in place the golfers will have to lay up and then chip over this sand onto the putting surface. Again it's OB right with some water on the left. HOLE NUMBER six. This is the old number seven which is a 195 yard par three. A great little three par that has OB left and sand right. . Hole number seven. This is probably the best golf hole on the course. It's the old num- ber eight which is a 390 yard par four that has a green engulfed by some of the meanest sand around. There is OB left, some rough stuff right and a tall tree in the middle of the fairway that always seems to be obstructing your second shot into the pin no matter where the drive lands. HOLE NUMBER eight. This is a new one and a good one. A 370 yard par four that has OB on the left and rough on the right. Then to add trouble there is water right in front of the green which discourages long hitters from hitting hit-ting their drivers. Most hit short of the water and then try to ship onto the green which is small and tough to hold. Another good hole. Hole number nine. A good finishing 190 par three hole that has OB on the left. The biggest problem on this hole has turned out to be the club selection and holding the putting surface on the first try. Again sand is waiting in front for any wayward shot. THERE IN a nutshell is the new course but already Toni has indicated a couple of changes. "The members, and other players, have mentioned men-tioned they would like the old number one par five hole back and we'll probably go with that. What that means is that numbers one and twc holes will be like they have in the past and then the new course will take over at the third hole. The problem we were running into was that on the new number two people were trying so hard to reach the green with their driver that they were hooking the ball and making life hard on those trying to putt on number four" he noted. Toni has tried to come up with a golf course that will be fun for his members to play. He realizes that the good hitters in the area will more than likely turn in some low scores but once again his main interest is to keep the members happy and with the return to one and two plus the new course the members are smiling smil-ing once again. |
