Show j AX APPEAL FOR LUMBERJACK ! RECKCITS "I want you for my lumberjack regiment" is the gist of an urgent appeal just issued by the Forest Service to the woodsmen of Utah and Southern Idaho. Already seventy-three men have been recruited in these States for the regiment, but more are needed. District Forester L. F. Kneipp points out that woodsmen of draft age can best serve their country by enlisting in the Forest Regiment rather than enlisting in military branches that are 'unable to take advantage ad-vantage of their special skill. Attached At-tached to the Engineers of the U. S. Army, this Regiment, it is expected, will soon go to France, where, equipped equip-ped and uniformed like the regular army, it will get out lumber and timber tim-ber for the trenches. Men from 18 to 40 years of age inclusive will lie accepted. "We want the lumberjacks and mill men of the Intermountaiu country coun-try to make as good a showing as their fellow workmen in other parts of the country," says the District Forester. "Here is a chance for them to show their patriotism. It is up to the Forest Service, the lumber lum-ber manufacturers, and the lumber jacks to make this regiment creditable credit-able to the great lumber industry of the country. Lumberjacks, with their well known love for adventure, will undoubtedly respond quickly to this opportunity for active service as soon as they understand the need." Men for the following ranks are particularly needed: Platoon stable bosses (Corporals, pay, $40.80). Privates, 1st Class (Teamsters, logging and wagon; pay, $36.20). Wagoners (Wagon teamsters; pay, $40.20). Privates (Fellers, buckers, swampers, swamp-ers, cordwood cutters, logging crew loaders, roustabouts, motor truck loaders, portable mill carriage men, log rollers, lumber stackers; pay, $33.00). Corporals (Head choppers; pay, $40.80). Corporals (Portable, mill engineers; engi-neers; pay $40.80). Corporals (Special detail, spare men; pay $40.80). Privates, 1st Class (Special detail, spare men; pay, $36.60). The pay figures given are monthly rates for foreign service. All men interested in the Forest Regiment are urged by the District Forester to get in touch with the local lo-cal Forest officers of their region, from whom detailed information and application blanks can be secured. |
