S. wireless xal , returned to this port late Monday afternoon, aft-ernoon, bringing with them the foits-four foits-four survivors, who were found clinging cling-ing to the stranded hull of the ship Unavailing efforts had been made all the previous night by the lifesaving crews along the shore, but the storm would not permit a small, craft to reach the wreck. Naval gunners shot a 'line from the shore across the bow of the ship, but there was no apparent effort to make the line fast, and it was believed that all aboard were dead. When the rescue ships finally reached the scene they found the few who were saved clinging to the wreckage in a grim, determined battle with death, amid a foaming sea and the bitter elements ele-ments of the storm, which had not yet subsided. Many of them were unconscious uncon-scious and were still unable to talk when they were brought here. The coastal steamer Prospero, the sealer Terra Nova and a government ship, Home, met the lifeboats, which had first reached the wreck, but were unable to land. The survivors were taken aboard the larger vessels. The captain of the Prospero reported that the Florizel was at the mercy of the waves. Her wireless had been destroyed de-stroyed by a fire which started in the forecastle. Several persons attempted to reach the shore in small boats before help reached them, and were swallowed up within sight of those who had remained re-mained on board. Many were swept overboard during the storm. Ten bodies have been washed ashore, one a woman. |
