Show How Alexander Assumed Power. As the old legend goe, the fatliar of Greek King Midas, once king q Phrygia, was originally a poor peasant. The people of Phrygia being much, disturbed, dis-turbed, nn oracle had Informed them that a wagon would bring them a king who would put an end to all their troubles. Not long after this saying, Gordius (Midas' father) suddenly aiv rived in the midst of an assembly oi the people, riding lu his wagon. At once, to the great surprise of Gordlus, they made him king. In his gratitude, Gordlus dedicated the wagon to tha god Zeus, and it was placed la the acropolis at Gordlum. The pole of the wagon was tied to the yoke by a knot of bark, and a second oracle declared that whoever untied that knot should reign over all Asia. It was Alexander who untied the knot with his sword thus assuming himself to be the man referred to by tha oracle. |
