Armed resistance resist-ance to the selective draft has developed de-veloped in Oklahoma, and as a result there has been bloodshed and wholesale whole-sale arrests. With one of their leaders dead, another an-other captured, and at least twenty-five twenty-five members of their hands in the hands of peace officers, posse leaders are of the opinion the backbone of the rising of objectors to the selective draft in five counties of Oklahoma has been broken. The outlaws have been scattered into such small bands in the hills and woods that further success of the resistance re-sistance is believed impossible. allace Cargill, alleged leader of one of the bands, shot through the stomach Sunday afternoon when officers of-ficers encountered objectors near Rocky Point, died a short time later. Three others besides Cargill were capful cap-ful ed. From prisoners the name of virtually virtual-ly every leader has been ascertained. These call themselves captains and are distinguished by a brilliant red sash. Contrary to previous reports the rebels appeared to be amply supplied with ammunition, although their firearms are of every conceivable pattern. A survey of the hardware stores in ' the affected district has revealed that the ammunition stocks have been bought up for the past several weeks, evidently evi-dently in anticipation of armed resistance. resist-ance. It was believed that the activities of the cbjectors in this state, most of whom are said to belong to the "Working "Work-ing Class union,'' but some being enrolled en-rolled in the "Jones family," a band with a similar purpose, and the "I. W. XV." were but a part of a nationally spread propaganda to resist service in the army. |
