Show BOOST FOR ; riT. PLEASANT AX OPEN Lr.TTKR TO THE PEOPLE PEO-PLE OF MOUNT PLEASANT Is it not time for us to wake up and boost for our own town? Let this boost be a real one, not a spasmodic spas-modic for a day or a week. If every man and woman in Mount Fleasam would work for their home city in j every way possible, it would not be long until we would have a changed town, in every respect. If Salt Lake City, witij its 100,- 000 inhabitants, did not work for and boost for their town, what would it amount to as a live thriving city? High on the side waiLs of some of its buildings, perched also upon high places, may be seen such signs as the following: "Salt Lake, the best city on Earth," "For pure air,: fine climate, rich in mineral resour-l e.s, our state stands at the head," "Salt Lake, the great convention of the nation." ' These and dozens of o:her catchy ; phrases, sent out by the live Commercial Commer-cial Club of thai city, catch the eye of thousands of people and many come and locate and help to build up the state and city. But there is another topic that I think could be, and should be heeded by our people. Many thousands of dollars aie sent out by the people to the mail order houses of Chicago and other cities for goods which should be left at home. This sending away for goods, becomes be-comes a mania and is little thought of by the people. They pay their money in advance before they ever see the goods they are buying. How does this help build up the town? The result is that the mail order houses flourish like a "green bay tree" while the j local merchant who helps pay the ' taxes, and w ho are called upon to do-j nate to every celebration or impor- j tant gathering, are drained to the limit. Do these mail order houses help to contribute to all the things that our local merchants are called upon to do? Not by a long shot. When the farmers roundup was held here last winter every local merchant r.nd business man was called on for help. Did they refuse? Look at the l:st and you will find that they all contributed freely. Why? To boost the town they live in. Would Sears and Roebuck or Montgomery Ward and Co. or The National Cloak and Suit Co. or Bellas, Hess and Co., help you out? I think not. Try thera once, and see. When you need a favor or are in need of an accommodation, would you dare ask the above mentioned houses to whom many of you send to for goods, would you ask them to give you credit? If you did, would they extend the courtesy? Try it and see. And yet you ask your home merchant and as a rule, you are not turned down. j You show base ingratitude when ' you ask them to help you out. o.ml then when you get a dollar, send away for things you need. But you ' say, "I can buy cheaper of the mail ' order houses." The writer of this ' tried it once, and he had an c e ; o-ener for once in his life. Hj said then that if the Lord would fo.-Rive; him for that offense, he would never. c"o it again; and he never has. When : the goods came they did not tally up i 'he least wkh (he description as given, and they were at once re- 1 ed, while the spnder was a wiser : and sader man. Your home nier-; chant, as a rule, stands ready to make all thincs right that you do not think r.-e iust as they t.l.ould be. He rays his taxes t.i the state, pays the city a l'cense, pays the electric light company, com-pany, the telephone company, the w ater tax and helps to make the city grow better. Does Sears Roebuck & Co. and all 'he others give us any help along anv line? Then, why help them as you do. every day. This does not apply to every individual in this city, because be-cause there are some who have brains enough to know better. i We appeal to those who do not think for themselves, Bnd who. I believe they do this thonrhtlesslv. Lot us wake up, and build up our homcTown, and sustain our ho:ne merchants, and all that pertains to C n keeping of our dollars at home. The more money left at home, the more is spent here. Boost for and luv home made products. Sustain ho-rie Industry, and help build up our o- ii state, county and city. That Is thp slogan that (-very Mt. I'leasnntcr phould have in mind. Let Chicago hive Spur" Rnchnrk. Montgomery Ward if- Co.. and let M Pleasant have l' stores, and all that goes to make It richer Bnd better. Your. Truly, A Booster. |
