Show Much has been said cf the j Titanic disaster and severe criticisms made. There are! questions of vital importance that arise in the minds of the public that demand regard for others. Why should not the officers I of the Titanic take immediate steps of precaution when the first warning of danger was received, reducing the rate of speed and throwing search lights ahead in search of the iceburgs when they knew danger dan-ger was near? Why should the White Star line try to make record trips at this time of year imperling the lives of so many when burgs are frequent? It makes one's heart rend to think of the horror of this disaster dis-aster and how easily it could have been avoided. The writer of this article has had a number num-ber of years traveling on the mighty deep, in all kinds of vessels ves-sels commanded by many differ ent captains, and stood beside them in times of danger watching watch-ing their anxiety for the safety of the vessel as they paced the bridge. Never did they think of sleep at any hour of the night until all danger was past. They used powerful searchlights looking far ahead that danger might be avoided. But, who can judge wherein the fault of this disaster lies? The mania for speed and record-making record-making is so great that the passengers pas-sengers demand it and in order to comply with the desire of the public, big syndicates spend enormous sums of money to make the finest vessels with the most powerful engines that they may cross the great oceans in the least number of hours, because be-cause the traveler always seeks for the shortest route and the company with the best luxuries gets the business. This will be the last misfortune misfor-tune of this kind as it is commanding com-manding the attention of the great nations of the world and they will not permit any vessel to go to sea in the future unless it is provided with a sufficient number of life-boats to ensure the safety of all on board. On another page of this issue is given a full and correct account ac-count of the disaster of the Titanic Ti-tanic and will be of deep interest inter-est to the readers of the Pyramid. |
