Show RAYNER ARRAIGNS ISMAY. Managing Director of White Star Line Bitterly Attacked in Senate. Washington. An indictment, rarely equaled in its vigor, of J. Bruce Ismay, Is-may, managing director, and other officials of the White Star line, holding hold-ing them responsible for the Titanic disaster, was delivered in the senate on Friday by Senator Rayner or Maryland, who pictured Ismay as "the officer primarily responsible for the whole disaster, who has reached his destination In safety and unharmed." Senator Rayner pointed out that while neither civil nor criminal remedies rem-edies were available in the American courts, criminal and civil suits could be brought in the British courts and that a congressional committee would have absolute authority to subpoena every one connected with the disaster and that if anyone should refuse to answer questions he could be indicted nd imprisoned for contempt. "Mr. Ismay claims, according to report, re-port, that he took the last lifeboat," cried Senator Rayner. "1 do not be-j lieve it, and if he did, it was coward-1 ly to take any lifeboat; for the nian-j aging director of the line, with his board, is criminally responsible for1 this appalling tragedy. j "If this had happened on an Amer- ican vessel, there would be no ques-i tion that an indictment would hp I found, and if the facts were sustained, j the officers of the company could be convicted of manslaughter, if not of murder, because the evidence is clenrj that the vessel was not properly equipped with efficient lifesaving ap- oaratus " I |
