Show INDIAN RELICS ARE FOUND NEAR BEAVER AROH.OLOGISTS MAKE IMPORTANT IMPORT-ANT DISCOVERIES IX MOl'XDS OF UTAH. BEAVER, June 27. Neil M. Judd of the archaeological department of Smithsonian Institution and Ambrose McGarry of the University of Utah have recently discovered some largs Indian mounds east of Beaver City. For several days they have been excavating ex-cavating in the mounds and havr unearthed three human skeletons Indian pottery, arrowheads, needles and other relics have been found ii 'bundance. Some of the pottery if in a splendid state o preservation and shows that the Indians who madr it were of the semi-civilized tribes who Inhabited the southwestern part of the United States. The workmanship workman-ship of the vessels greatly resembles that of the Nnvajo pottery. The mounds themselves cover a great area and are divided into rooms ranging in size from about 4 feet tr twenty feet square. Iri the center o' one of the largest rooms was fount1 an Indian corn mill. This mill con isted of a ln'se hollow stone, which was set in the ftoo-, and a smaller smooth stone, which fit into the hollow hol-low of the larger one. Several smaller smal-ler milling stones were found in thf other rooms of the mo-unds. Mr. Judd has traveled throughou 'he southern part of the state, collecting col-lecting specimens from the raoundf in various pieces for the Smithsoniar Institution. None of the mounds however, was so, large and interesting interest-ing as those which he found at Beaver. Beav-er. He has found several other large mounds near Manderfield, Utah j which he expects to excavate eoon. |
