Show Do Flies Carry Polio? "Certain species of flies, including in-cluding the common house fly, carry polio virus declares Dr. L. P. Gebhart, of the University of Utah, who has studied the disease dis-ease for sixteen years. The doctor points out that "most new cases appear during the fruit harvest season and at times and places where flies are plentiful." He says that all of 241 Utah victims of the disease, whom he interviewed, admitted eating fresh, unpeeled, unwashed fruits or vegetables shortly before be-fore contracting the disease. The doctor's rules for preventing prevent-ing polio include elimination of the breeding places of flies, killing kill-ing flies, teaching children to eat only what their mothers give them, washing fresh foods with soap and water and keeping children's hands clean when eating. eat-ing. In the poinion of this doctor polio is not as bad as measles or whoopping cough, both of which cause a larger number of deaths, on a percentage and total basis. He says he would be more alarmed if his son caught either disease than "if he should get polio." |
