Earlier in the day, at a special .ncheon at Hotel Utah, Mr. Shoemaker Shoe-maker had presented President : ames A. Nuttall a check of $5,-o00, $5,-o00, a gift to the Snow College -arm. In commenting concerning he gift, Mr. Shoemaker made this statement, "It is an investment invest-ment not a gift our prosperity coincides with the prosperity of the farmers in the state of Utah. Dr. Seth Shaw, director of Farm Markets and Trade Relations, Rela-tions, Inc., said that he had become be-come interested in this venture when a group first interviewed the Governor concerning the proposed pro-posed farm. He maintained lhat farming as a way of life is not very much unless the farm is made productive. The emphasis em-phasis in this project is new in this state in that it stresses profitable prof-itable farm techniques applicable appli-cable in this area. Mr. Shaw's company made the initial grant to the college farm, a gift of $400, which has been spent in securing registered livestock to begin the school herds. Mr. Mark Nichols, State Supervisor Su-pervisor of Agriculture, commented com-mented that he wanted to dream with the guests concerning the future of this project, which is to train boys to be farmers rather rath-er than professional agriculturists. agricultur-ists. It will be a post high-school program, set up with three-fold objectives: To develop farmers with leadership, dignity, and with technical skills. It is more than a Snow College project; pride in this institution will be not only comunity wide, but state wifie and nation wide. State Superintendent Charles H. Skidmore congratulated Mr. Shoemaker in putting such a large spark into this farm project. proj-ect. Assistant State Superintendent ' David Gourley said that the emphasis em-phasis in the proposed project is a needed emphasis in education. Mr. Merrill Warnick, president of the State Dairy Corporation, and Mr. Don E. Kenney, State Commissioner of Agriculture, called attention that these contributions con-tributions were just a beginning, that more would come as the farm develops. Other guests were Mrs. H. C. Shoemaker, the wives of the donors of livestock, Reuel Christensen, Chris-tensen, State Representative; Ray P. Lund, Senator; Tom Jensen, Jen-sen, field representative for the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern South-ern Utah; mayors of the several towns in the district; county superintendents, agricultural directors di-rectors and principals of high schools, local bankers and business busi-ness men; and faculty members of Snow College. The Utah Poultry Association, who;e manager is Ralph Poul-son, Poul-son, gave the college four large turkeys, which provided meat for the banquet. Mr. H. A. Anderson Ander-son furnished the cheese. |
