Show Select High Quality Seed The value of good, clean, productive pro-ductive seed cannot be over eesti-mated, eesti-mated, says J. C. Hogensn, extension exten-sion agronomiit of the Utah State Agricultural Octtlege. Good seed is viable and hence will grow and produce pro-duce a plant. Some seeds that farmers plant have a germination of only from 60 to 75 per cent. That means that only from 60 to 75 out cf every hundred seeds will grow. That kind of fried is not good seed. Good seed should have a germination cf from 95 to 100 per cent. Clean seed is free from both plant diases and weed serd. Plant dis-oase dis-oase spores may be killed by treating treat-ing the sred before planting, while most weed seeds may be removed by proper fanning of the wed grain Poductive seed has a p"digTee. It is seed with a record behind it and that is adapted to the lar.d and climate In other words, it is ce-tiefid ned, such as is grown by conscientious seed-mindkxl farmers, or seed-Improvement associations. It is really surprising the number ' w?ed seeds that are ordinarily sown with s-ed grain, observes Mr. Hogenson. Very often as many a 10.000 w'leds are sown with every bushel of reed grain, and still many farmers w'nder how these bad weeda ever got a start on their farm. Plant weed-free, disease-free seed for best remits, and at the same time keep your farm clean and free from these p:eta, advises Mr. Hogenson. |
