Show Schools Approve Plan for Stopping Truancy in District The Alpine District Board of Education, at regular meeting, Nov. 16, approved a policy recommended recom-mended by the district staff, the high school principals, and the Third District Juvenile Court of Utah, to curb the rising tendency of some students who unwisely choose to spend school hours driving driv-ing and or riding in automobiles rather than being in regular attendance at-tendance in school. The plan is intended to encourage encour-age maximum school attendance. Students who are out of school for any legitimate reason will be provided an excuse by the school. The adoption of this policy brings violators within the jurisdiction juris-diction of the Juvenile Court. The Court has the power to require any aotion on the part of students which, in the discretion of the Court, is to the best interest of the student. The Court has announced that students must understand that they will be in danger of being restrained from driving and of having their drivers' licenses held by the Court, if, at the students' hearing it appears that they have driven or ridden in a car while truant from school. The period of time for holding the drivers' license li-cense will be determined by the Court and will depend upon the seriousness of the case and the needs of the individual student. It is hoped that it will not be necessary to invoke this rule. As long as students attend school regularly, there will be no need to enforce the provision of this program. All peace officers are requested to cooperate in the enforcement of this program and to report to the school officials and to the Court any students observed riding rid-ing in automobiles during school hours. |
