Show Informal Birthday Honoring the Timpanogos Cave National Monument Will Be Held Oct- 14 An informal birthday party honoring hon-oring the Timpanogos Cave National Na-tional Monument will be held at Cave Camp in American Fork Can- yon on Sunday, October 14, according ac-cording to Thomas A. These include: Walter Hanson, American Fork, son of Martin Hanson, who discovered dis-covered the old Hanson Cave in 1887116 Old Hanson Cave is now the' entrance to the present Timpanogos Tim-panogos Cave system. ' ' Verl J. Manwell, Salt Lake City, who discovered Timpanogos Cave proper, August 14, 1921. Leo T. Hanson, American Fork, who discovered the "Middle Cave" in 1925. Middle Cave was connected con-nected to Timpanogos Cave during dur-ing the year 1948. Leo J. Meredith and Clifford E. Young, American Fork, members of the original local Timpanogos Cave committee organized in 1921. This committee promoted the development de-velopment of the cave, collected funds and recommended the establishment es-tablishment of the cave as a national na-tional monument. Also specially invited are all present and former employees or ' Timpanogos Cave and Cave Camp area, Mr. Walker said. Timpanogos Cave and adjacent area became a National Monument by proclamation of President Warren War-ren G. Harding, October 14, 1922. The Timpanogos Cave birthday party is being observed as part of the National Park Service's 40th anniversary and is designated as Timpanogos- "Cave Establishment Day." The 10-year period from 1956 to 1966 is being devoted to the improvement im-provement of the facilities of the National Parks and to a better accomodation ac-comodation of the increasing number num-ber of visitors. This period of 10 years has received the designation of "Mission 66" and will culminate with a national celebration on Aug. 16, 1966 the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the National Parks Service. Since the designation of Timpanogos Tim-panogos Cave as a National Monument Monu-ment the trail has been relocated, electric lights installed in the cave and administrative and camping facilities enlarged and improved at the Cave Camp. In keeping with the plans of Mission 66, the administrative personnel per-sonnel at the Timpanogos Cave area will be adequately increased, the facilities for visitors will be enlarged and modernized, the trail hard-surfacing program will be completed and better living accomodations accom-odations for employees will be provided. According to Mr. Walker, visitors visit-ors to Timpanogos Cave during 1956 have totalled 30,800. They have come from every state in the Union, the American possessions, and 28 foreign countries. |
